Listening to my country

I switched over to the AM band and picked up the Red Sox game just as I was passing Fenway on the Pike on my way home from Boston. I listened to the play-by-play for a while, hearing about Victor Martinez’s long out to center field and J.D Drew’s double to put the Sox ahead. When the inning ended, I hit the search button on the radio, revisiting a world from long ago

Where we belong is where we are

The teen-aged boy, whose name I didn’t catch, reminded me that “if you take care of your truck, your truck will take care of you.” He was one of a couple dozen young people who were helping to set up the flea market at the Phillipston school. Several pickup trucks were shuttling items from the church basement to the school. I know some of the people, but very few

SideBar options in Zoho Business

Last week I briefly talked about an easy way to reorder applications in Zoho Business by simply dragging and dropping items on the side bar. When you click on an app on the sidebar, the application launches on the right within Zoho Business. What if you don’t want the application to launch within Zoho Business?

Why We Haven't Taken Venture Capital

Many people in the technology industry express surprise that Zoho has never received any outside capital, and has been bootstrapped from the beginning. I get roughly 3 calls from venture capitalists, private equity firms and the like a week, and I find that I have to repeat myself way too often. It gets boring after a while, so may be a post will help! First, let me state that I don’t have any fundamental religious issues with venture capital.

Slow water

They’ll resume work in the morning, first to recheck the rate of water flow. At day’s end on Friday, at a depth of 440 feet, we were getting about 2.5 gallons/minute, half of what’s recommended. We might be able to get by, but the pump would have to work harder, shortening its life.

Graduations in the old country

While American kids are looking forward to graduation gifts of cars, clothes, electronics, or at least enough cash to buy same, kids in Finland are dancing in the streets because the new potatoes are in. ” The first Finnish new potatoes of the summer were lifted in Naantali’s Rymättylä on Tuesday morning. Farmer Heikki Vainio , 63, of Röölä was already in full swing with potato harvesting at 9 o’clock in the morning.” Summer’s first new potatoes available for graduation parties ” According to Vainio, the main thing is that the new potatoes are available in time for the school-leaving parties of the new upper secondary school graduates – the ones who will be receiving their white caps this year

Oakmont scraps spring dance after ‘grinding’ at prom

It’s with great pride that I report on my high school alma mater This year’s prom “was not necessarily worse than usual, but the problem is it’s not getting any better,” For a historical perspective, it’s doubtful that there would have been much of this kind of stuff from a class of kids who looked like this.

HP Layoffs – Are Tech Companies Feeding on Themselves

HP is laying off 9,000 workers (read Hewlett-Packard to cut 9K jobs in services unit ) as it “deepens its use of software, rather than people, to do some of the work that those hubs require.”  Industrial economies are heading toward a point that when they become so efficient, when they do so much with automation, that they won’t be able to recover jobs, because they haven’t retooled their thinking to replace high wage, high skill displaced jobs.

East meets west

On Sunday afternoon, we were talking about the latest craziness on the Korean peninsula. We wondered why it is that China kept backing North Korea when, it seemed, the larger country got nothing but grief and the small country got lots of aid and protection, no matter how stupidly it behaved. A small, nuclear-armed outlier nation was setting the agenda and was out of control.

Future of News, Phillipston-style

While the print and broadcast news media wrestle flail in paroxysms of poverty as Google and Twitter steal their lunch money, the good folk of Phillipston bring the important information directly to the people. (Editor’s note: at this writing, I’ve not been able to confirm our news source, but I suspect that it’s Claire.)

What we see changes as much as we do

On our way back from Amherst, Sandra and I often stop at the lookout on Daniel Shays Highway (U.S. Route 202) in Pelham, Mass. A long time ago, when we were first dating, the view of the Quabbin Reservoir was good.
