Wikipedia as a Printed Book – Seriously!

The English edition of Wikipedia Encyclopedia contains around 3 million articles as of now and if someone were to print the entire Wikipedia encyclopedia into a book, the size of that book would roughly be equivalent to 952 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Not sure if anyone is willing to go that far but a student in UK has actually converted 0.01% of the Wikipedia encyclopedia into a printed book

Taking a Cue from Digg, Google Introduces Ads in Orkut That You Can Trash

If you don’t like a particular ad on your screen, just throw it in the bin but if you found it interesting or useful, why not share the ad with your other friends – this seems to be the new advertising formula for Digg and now Orkut. The traditional banner ads and even contextual advertising (like AdSense) is not really working on social news sites so web companies like Facebook and Digg are trying more innovative ways to get the advertiser’s message across to their users without actually annoying them. For instance, Digg introduced a new advertising platform early this month that gives users more control over advertisements that get displayed on the Digg website.

The Empty Jar And 2 Cups of Coffee When things in your life seem, Almost too much to handle, When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,Remember the story of the empty jar and 2 cups of coffee. How to Use Google News Timeline as an RSS Reader

Google News Timeline is an interesting tool where you can browse historical events, current news, movie releases and other kinds of information in a graphical timeline. For instance, you can search for TIME magazine on Google News Timeline and it will display a list of all issues of the magazine in chronological order (arranged by date). Click any of the TIME covers to open the corresponding issue on the TIME website.

Upload Photos to Twitter via Flickr Email

How do you share photographs with friends on Twitter? You probably upload them to an online photo sharing site (like Flickr or Picasa Web Gallery) first and then copy-paste the web address of the uploaded image into your Twitter client. Or you prefer to use Twitter specific services like Twitpic that automatically send a "tweet" on your behalf as soon as the image is uploaded

PS… Graphical illustration of Scale of the Difference between Projects

This graph was meant to be the supporting image for the previous post… It illustrates the scale difference between projects that receive large flows of traffic and comments compared to those that don’t. Keep in mind that all of these consultations were for local issues – rather than State or National

Make it Concrete

I’ve been attempting to write a post for a couple of weeks now about what drives traffic to our online forums. If I had a bin in the corner it would be full to overflowing with earlier drafts of a tedious and over-thought thesis on the difference between our sites that “go off” and the sites that receive very few comments. So I’ve decided to simplify things with a very short statement of the obvious.

Are older people really under represented in an online engagement?

A while ago I wrote about some of the issues we encounter when engaging youth online and how people sometimes assume that young people will come to a website just because it is a website. Of course this is wrong. Equally wrong are the people who assume that older people (the over 65s) cannot be engaged online

More on Twitter

I’ve been looking around for more on Twitter and found 2 articles that I wanted to share on the blog Social Media Today the first in a post by Themos Kalafatis who has done a statistical analysis on usage patterns likely to lead to success on Twitter: Some usage patterns that raise the chance of having a successful Twitter account are the following : * Having a bio is an absolute must : 82.3% of unsuccessful Twitter accounts have their biography information missing. * You should provide more than 3 links per 20 tweets and also more than 0.960 updates per day * If you don’t want to provide more than 3 links per 20 tweets, then try to post more than 5.857 updates per day

Twitter Guidelines

Many organisations are coming to grips with the best ways to use Twitter. I’ve been meaning to share a few things I have learned but have been distracted by one thing or another for a while. This morning I’ve been reading the eGov blog put together by Craig Thomler in which he has highlighted guidelines from Mosman Council on Twitter use and also an article identifying that there are over a million Australian twitter users.

Opportunity and Need

I thought I would spend some self indulgent time reflecting on why online engagement is important and why (a year ago now) I was so keen to get out of a successful consultancy and to start Bang the Table.  Obviously this was a partnership decision, Crispin and I were partners in our consulting business before starting Bang the Table, I will speak for my motivations here – but I know Crispin’s weren’t wildly different

Windows Authentication due to cross domain

Another interesting way to hide the Windows Authentication every time when the user trying to use ArcGIS Server services. First go through the cross domain.xml in given link below This article explains it better than I could: http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/flex/help/content/references/using_crossdomain_xml.htm If you place cross domain.xml is your web server , it asks windows authentication everytime, this really irritates the user
