White Executives Should Head to the ‘Hood
Now that I'm in my 40s, some of my friends who are married with children are starting to divorce. I've seen firsthand how hard it is for them at home and at work. One friend completely botched a work assignment because she was so emotionally spent.

Will daddy wars erupt in this decade the way the mommy wars did in the last one? Eight years ago, when I wrote a book examining why accomplished women have such a hard time integrating career and children, the data found that approximately 40 percent of professional women are childless at age 40.

Are there times at work when you say to yourself, “Wow I wish I knew that years ago?” With so many graduations this month, I asked people in various professions what work/life and career advice they would offer a new graduate.

Women who run businesses are working harder than ever to stay ahead of the curve. They are working so hard that more of them, at least in Florida, find that their career is interfering with their responsibilities at home, according to the Florida's Woman-Led Businesses 2010 study released today by the FIU Center for Leadership and The Commonwealth Institute South Florida .
Do you ever feel like you would rather pick up trash on the side of the highway that go into work and deal with the jerk sitting next to you? I have to answer yes to that one. Last week, I was invited to attend a workshop on how to deal with difficult personalities at work.

Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG has made a daring move by introducing a quota for female managers, aiming to fill 30 percent of upper and middle management jobs with women by the end of 2015, compared with only 13 percent in 2008. The company has 15,000 manager positions worldwide. Is this a good thing

Heated debates are going on all over the country on whether to ban text messaging and cell phone use while driving. I've really been thinking a lot about this topic after judging a high school contest and talking to a student who has formed an organization urging people to stop texting and talking in their cars ( STATIC ). I really don't think teens have the maturity to text or talk on their cell phones and drive the car

Today the Center for WorkLife Law (WLL), in conjunction with the Center for American Progress (CAP), released a groundbreaking report on work-family conflicts across class. At a time when many children find themselves nose-to-screen with their favorite television programs, it is refreshing to see more and more kids burying their nose in a simple book instead. That is, of course, unless you got that book from Little Write Brain .

I just read a great blog post on WorkingMother.com by a mompreneur who survived her first year in business. I found it inspiring. As Toyi Ward (MaxiMom) points out, hitting this 1-year milestone can be challenging. Statistics show a failure rate of new businesses in the first year range from the sensationalized 90% to a more reasonable 26%. Ward says, “The pressure to give up my flexible schedule and autonomy for the 80-hour work week was knocking at my door

A lot of words are being slung around as the Senate confirmation hearing on Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court gets under way, but some of the most significant were first uttered nearly 400 years ago. Shakespeare’s comment, “What’s past is prologue,” is especially true with regard to the court’s first Latina candidate. One obvious allusion is to Sotomayor’s now-famous “wise Latina” remark, which resulted in Rush Limbaugh labeling her a racist.

What's taking women so long to wear black? Ruth Bader Ginsberg has worn it well….will Judge Sonia Sotomayor be the next to wear it? As we begin the confirmation hearings that stand between Sotomayor and a seat near Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the high bench, it's sad to think that it took so long for a women to have this opportunity

It feels pretty amazing to be in control of my own destiny. I'm self employed and loving it. I have lots of company. A new Census report shows a big boost in the number of people who are self employed (loving it is optional!). People formed more than 1 million nonemployer businesses between 2006 and 2007, representing a growth rate of 4.5 percent

This post was co-authored by Ripa Rashid. Among the images of Iran’s anti-government demonstrations flooding the media, none has been as potent as that of Neda , the young woman the world watched bleed to death on the streets of Tehran after being shot, it is believed, by the pro-government militia. Her death was symbolic on two fronts: it put a human face to violent repression, and conjured up the increasingly powerful presence of women in this most Muslim of nations.
