I’m getting ready for our trip to explore the Rio Grande Rift . Like the Rift, our route will bisect New Mexico, from north of Santa Fe all the way down to Las Cruces. There will be geologic glories galore, including calderas (volcanic craters), lava frozen in place by millions of years of time, mountains (ditto), and the sparkling water of the Rio Grande itself.

The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents — both present and still-to-come.

The code is called the Press Engine, and it could, just possibly, turn into a powerful tool for transforming the newspaper business. The Press Engine exists because other publishers, like the Dallas Morning News, approached the New York paper and requested access to the code it used to build its iPad and iPhone apps–so taken were they by the design.
