National Apprenticeship Week

This week (1 st to 5 th February 2010) is National Apprenticeship Week. The week, which is organised by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), aims to celebrate the talents and skills of apprentices and recognise their employers. The Government aims to increase the number of apprenticeships available in the future, seeing it as a crucial way of reducing the proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEETs).  The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has said: we will continue to expand apprenticeships with the ambitious goal that within the next 10 years, one in five young people should be able to take up an apprenticeship. And we are committed to providing an apprenticeship place for every suitably qualified 16-18 year old from 2013 and increasing the number of advanced apprenticeships so that those in vocational learning have clear routes to progress in their careers

An Unlikely Haven For Rock ’n’ Roll Entrepreneurs

This small town in Pennsylvania Dutch country, in the midst of cornfields and dairy farms, would seem an unlikely home for a warehouse filled with the detritus of rock concerts past and future — a large section of the stage for the next Black Eyed Peas tour, the sets for an Elton John concert and gigantic lips from the Rolling Stones, reports The New York Times .

Got A Decision To Make? Get Some Sugar In Your System

Researchers at the University of South Dakota asked 65 students to answer a series of questions in which they had to choose between getting a smaller sum of money “tomorrow” or a larger sum in the future, according to a story at Physorg.com . The study participants responded to half the questions on an empty stomach and the other half after consuming a caffeine-free soda sweetened either with sugar or the artificial sweetener aspartame. Blood glucose levels were measured at the start of the experiment and after the volunteers drank the soda.
