Sony’s Goalsetting and the Value of Zero

Though corporate green efforts have grown exponentially in the last decade, most initiatives fall woefully short of what’s necessary to meet the enormous sustainability challenges we face — from climate change to water shortages to poverty and social equity. That’s why it’s so refreshing to see one large company, Sony, set a goal of zero environmental footprint by 2050.

If Your Company Went Out of Business, Would Anybody Notice?

One of the truly jarring dimensions of the Great Recession is the death sentence it has imposed on of hundreds of brands, even whole companies, that were once familiar parts of the business landscape — not just bankruptcies, but liquidations and flat-out disappearances. Once-proud automobile nameplates, including GM’s Oldsmobile and Pontiac, and Ford’s Mercury, have become history

Pride ‘n Politix – Hold On (1991)

Pride ‘n Politix were one of many bands of the time that looked like they had potential but were very quickly to sink without a trace. With the requisite number of white/not white band members, some reasonable singer/songwriter talent and a knack for aping the soul/acid jazz sound that was big at the time, they seemed poised for success in the ‘States, but actually just released one single, one album and then broke up.

How You Made My Life Easier, Free Nachos and Other Delights (Part 1)

Last week, I decided it was high time to do something about the number of hours I work.  I found myself wanting to take a crack at some random guy’s noggin just because he was stumbling around in a store, admitting to the cardinal sin of “killing time”.  I guess that kind of weird jealous rage was what professionals in the world of nuttiness might call a “clear signal”. Luckily, the guy was spared from a beat down.  I was in a hurry and didn’t have enough time to work him over.  Okay, the fact that I wasn’t really that upset was part of the deal, too. In any case, my thick skull was finally penetrated by the indisputable fact that burning the candle on both ends is rotten and that my approach–tossing it directly into a steel smelter is even worse

Two Crucial Ingredients For An Internet Home Business Owner

Guest Post by Bryan Beckstead Operating an internet home business requires the proper set of business skills; you may be surprised what two skills I am referring too. I have recently been redoing one of my web sites and in the process I am receiving some “expert“ advice on what steps I should be taking to improve my site. The way in which I am receiving this advice highlights an area that the majority of people working and operating on the internet are neglecting, and the result is that they are simply far less effective and profitable as they may otherwise be.

Learn to Embrace the Tension of Diversity

As leaders, the rich diversity of culture and thought around the world is one of our greatest resources — if we use it as such. Differences of ideas, methods, motivations, and competencies can be used to build great organizations. However, this wonderful resource can be a double-edge sword as cross-cultural exchanges present unlimited possibilities for misunderstandings and cultural blunders.

Go Back to Basic Banking

(Editor’s note: This post forms part of the month-long HBR Debate, “Finance: The Way Forward.” It is the third post on this week’s topic: “Do we really need banks — and what might take their place?”) If there is one strong message to come out of the banking crisis, it is that we need banks but not banks like the ones we have got.

The Three Roles of Great Entrepreneurs

Every start-up entrepreneur has an overwhelming amount to get done — the “to dos” are constantly outrunning the “dones.” It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and endless hours, and you often forget that running really hard does not necessarily equate with running in the right direction.
