We already talked about what a writer platform is , but what does (or can) a platform actually consist of? Your writing platform probably won’t look exactly like mine, and it won’t look like those of your colleagues necessarily. There are no tools or tactics that you must use, although there are some that are used more commonly than others

I LOVE to cook. I also love to find recipes, especially blogs that have recipes with pictures. I have been wanting to start my own recipe blog, but didn’t know what I wanted to call it.

It's been a long process moving things to the WorkAtHomeTruth store, but it seems to solve a lot of problems in one fell swoop. Note, I'm not an attorney, so get your own legal advice on how to implement your own material connection disclosure. I did however provide a tremendous amount of documentation to the FTC on one of their Operation Shortchange cases ( FTC v. In Deep Services ) that involved disclosures (although not affiliate disclosures) and spent a significant amount of time on the phone with one of the senior litigators there (and ultimately agreed to testify in the case). I also had significant involvement in helping consumers file complaints and recover money (at no charge to them) on two of the other Operation Shortchange Cases, including Google Money Tree (National Consumer's League used a lot of my write-up and blog discussion here ).

Normally I don’t talk about my clients directly on my blogs, but today is an exception. One of my clients (the owner of DirJournal.com ) made a special link building offer to writers and bloggers, and I’d like to share that with you today. But first, let’s talk about link building in general, why it’s important for freelance writers, and how you can build quality links to your blog or freelance writing portfolio

Link Building Tactics for Freelance Writers
This week’s freelance writing jobs are an odd crop. Basically, if you want regular work and you’re a sports writer in New Jersey, this is your banner week. For the rest of us, well, maybe it’s not quite as fruitful

Ever walk through a craft fair and say, “I could do that.” Ever hear someone say “you should sell your stuff?” Admit it – you wish that you could make a living doing the thing that you love doing the most….your craft. I understand exactly how you feel because I used to feel exactly the same way. I longed to make a living as an artist but I held myself back.

The New York Times reports that Goldman Sachs admitted in an email to clients it has traded ahead of its investment advice to them. Nice lede: For years, Wall Street whispered that Goldman Sachs profited handsomely by trading ahead of — or even against — its own clients.

My friend Dan Pink has just released a new book, called Drive , which explores “the surprising truths about what motivates us.” In it, he identifies with clarity (and cleverness) the three big drivers of performance and success: autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Dan’s advice speaks to individual performance, but some of it applies equally to business performance. With regard to having a sense of purpose, for example, he urges individuals to ask a question of themselves that I believe executives should also ask of their companies

Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti poses a vexing question for journalists and readers everywhere: If a disaster happens in an under-reported third world country, and there are only a couple of reporters on hand to document it, does it make a noise? Of course, the reverberations from the Haiti earthquake have been felt in headlines rippling across the globe. There is…

Dan Gross at Slate pushes back against the false notion that the banks have paid back all their bailouts—a nasty little lobbyist-planted meme that the press needs to nip in the bud. I noted this morning that The Wall Street Journal editorial columnist Holman Jenkins is already, unsurprisingly, on this train.

Managers’ received wisdom about what gets people to excel — money, stock options, more money, then some more money — doesn’t work well for a lot of today’s independent-minded, plugged-in cubicle dwellers, Daniel Pink says in this lively tour of recent scholarship on motivation. Citing work by Teresa Amabile of Harvard Business School, consultant Tammy Erickson , and many others, Pink, who is also the author of 2005′s A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future , looks at motivation from the viewpoints of both the leader and the led.

Four days into 2010 I received an email from a client, Erik, updating me on the progress he had made with his action plan since our last meeting in October. Back then, we had identified a number of things he needed to work on — including listening more effectively and being politically aware. The plan also included how he might measure his progress — for example, with the feedback he received from colleagues, improved relationships, and more visibility — and some target dates for improvement.
