The News Corp. Coverup

News Corp.’s behavior in the UK hacking scandal has all the hallmarks of a coverup. We’ve got the scapegoat (Clive Goodman), the pro forma internal investigation saying the problem was contained to said scapegoat, the scramble to hide or destroy evidence, the stonewalling “I don’t recalls” from executives like Dow Jones CEO Les Hinton, the large payments to key witnesses,…

Boy, Look Who National Journal’s Been Hiring

The National Journal Group has been generating a lot of buzz lately with big-name hires like Major Garrett, Matt Cooper, Marc Ambinder and Michael Hirsh. The latest addition to the team is Beth Reinhard, who’s leaving her job at The Miami Herald to become chief political correspondent. It’s nice to see National Journal look outside the Beltway, as…

The Case For The Confusing Headline

The Baltimore Sun reports today that a front page headline featuring the word “limn” drew some rather confounded feedback from readers. From Jill Rosen’s report: The offending word was “limn” (pronounced like “limb”). It appeared over a story about the leading contenders vying to become Baltimore County’s next executive.

A "9/11 Widow" on the Press & Park51

Back in May, when the words “Ground Zero mosque” began making headlines, CNN wanted to know: “As a family member of someone who was killed in the attacks on 9/11, what do you think about the decision to construct a mosque this close to Ground Zero?” Today in a column at Salon, Alissa Torres, a “9/11 widow,” offers an…

Why Tony Blair’s Leadership Journey Failed

Back in 1997, I was working on a newspaper which supported Tony Blair’s election campaign and included colleagues who went on to join Blair’s inner circle. The optimism and excitement during election night exploded as it became clear that the young moderniser of Britain’s Labour Party had won a landslide victory. These were heady days for all who believed in Blair, the charismatic young leader with a radical new voice.

Mark Hurd, Oracle, HP and the Limits of Boards

The great thing about the seemingly never-ending Mark Hurd saga, other than its seeming never-endingness, is that the paucity of real detail about what happened and the silence of the protagonist have allowed pundits to draw a veritable cornucopia of lessons out of it. I’ve been struggling for a while with just what lesson I wanted to draw — so many choices! — but the events of this week have offered up a new one that I think I’ll go with: boards of directors aren’t very good at running corporations

Partner with an NGO and Profit

Last month, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that pharmaceutical companies are reducing prices and licensing AIDS drugs for free to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or local manufacturers in developing countries. Such a model made it possible for a South African doctor to develop a breakthrough vaginal gel that reduced, by half, HIV transmission in women, by using a key ingredient donated by California-based Gilead Sciences.

What is good writing? What is successful writing?

I have spent the last years not making a living at being a writer; in particular the last 4 writing 2 novel manuscripts.  The first  went nowhere.  The second may soon follow suit. For nearly all of that time I had as my credo an outlook very similar to this one , as outlined by Douglas Glover , writer (if you read the whole post, I got involved in quite an exchange with him, one that included regular Don Merritt, too): A person writes because, through writing, he comes to know himself and the world better. A person may write for money or fame or to achieve social position by posing as a writer, but these are secondary and, to some extent, inauthentic motives that often result in inauthentic and second-rate writing

How I Downsized Myself

I know, I know. There’s nothing more boring than when bloggers write about their own experiences as a way to make a broader point about life, work, or society. But I hope you’ll indulge me this one time, as I reflect on a small matter of personal improvement and ask what it might say about the bigger challenge of making change in organizations.

Audit Notes: News Corp. Scandal, HSBC Hire, Dodd-Frank Repo

The News of the World scandal, back in the spotlight thanks to The New York Times Magazine, continues to grow. The Guardian reports that former Home Secretary Alan Johnson is now all but accusing Scotland Yard of lying to him about the extent of the News Corp. paper’s spying.

AP: Election 2010 is "Bursting With Money"

The AP today lays out evidence that “politics, for all its focus on the gloomy economy, is a recession-proof industry,” in that “this year’s volatile election is bursting with money, setting fundraising and spending records in a high-stakes struggle for control of Congress amid looser but still fuzzy campaign finance rules.” Worth a read, particularly if you took…

Sham Candidate Story Misses a Key Voice

Fascinating story from the Times’s Marc Lacey on sham candidates running for the Green Party in Tempe, Arizona. Sham candidates, that is, signed up by a Republican candidate for the State Legislature to siphon off votes from the Democrats. Naturally, Lacey reports the expected outrage from the Dems: “It’s unbelievable.

Congress and “Corporate-Financed Philanthropy”

In yesterday’s New York Times, Eric Lipton described how some members of Congress are able to “run something akin to a permanent political campaign,” giving back to their communities through charities that they set up but that local companies and major corporations largely fund. How lawmakers, in other words, manage to do well by doing good (and how that…
