Green roofs are a growing trend in the U.S., with buildings as diverse as the California Academy of Sciences, Minneapolis’ Target Center and the New York Mets’ Citi Field adopting roofs topped with dirt and living plants. by James Moore Choosing a painting contractor could actually begin with your friends, neighbors, or relatives experiences with their painting contractor. If you speak to one who was inordinately pleased with their painting contractor, ask to see their house. Look carefully at how well the trim work was handled around windows and doors, and ask questions about how the contractor prepared the work surface.

You may have heard of this by now, but if not you should do. There’s a charity fundraising drive going on at the moment called ‘Get Dring Mobile’, which is aiming to raise enough money to sort the legendary Mike Dring of Art-el fame out with a a modified vehicle he can drive himself. by Esti Edwards With the failing economy and the falling wages of worker, perhaps the solution to giving your car a different look will be to give your car a complete new paint job. If the mechanics and the engine of the car is in good shape, but you do not fancy the car body, then painting it will be the ideal answer. Its a fantastic money saver, but even more so if you do it yourself as opposed to having it professionally done up in the workshop.

(By Nalini S Malaviya) In the last few years awareness about art has increased substantially, and these days, most people are familiar with artist’s names, local galleries and prominent auction houses as events, art shows and auction reports are widely publicized in the media. The number of people who are buying art has also grown with time, although their reasons for owning it might be different. Most people still buy art for dressing their walls – to match the sofa or a particular wall colou

For those of you who haven’t checked out the magazine LoftLife – The Loft Style Guide to Life in the City , it is a must read. And I don’t say that only because I am on their ‘Board of Experts’ – the Editors and Creative Directors are top notch. Their style and editorials are fresh, relevant and timely. Last fall Kyra Shapurji, Managing Editor and Linden Hass, Photo Editor paid me a visit at my office in Vancouver to firm up a feature they were doing on favourite shopping spots of mine and a few other Design Professionals in Vancouver (see Spring 2009 Travel/80 Victorious Vancouver: Canada’s design & architecture capital.) Linden Hass shot a few pictures of me and the drawing below is what resulted. LoftLife Magazine Board of Experts I love the illustrations by the talented Graham Smith from San Diego. He illustrates the masthead and the Panel of Experts for LoftLife magazine. This month LoftLife is going to be on national newsstands: Borders, Barnes and Noble, as well as Hudson News. So pick-up your copy and read their articles. In the current Summer 2009 issue I particularly like: Travel/74 Allure of Amsterdam: Dutch Design Beyond Droog.

So remember how tight that concept was of that one Charleston, SC artist , who decided to make a civil rights coloring book, then have actual kids color it, then turn those into paintings a couple of years ago? Yeah, well, turns out Glenn Ligon, one of the leading African American artists outside of Charleston had almost the exact same idea as early as 1999. That’s when Ligon was an artist-in-residence at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where he studied the contemporary history of b

Wendy McCarthy’s new show at the Anchor & Palette Gallery in Bay Head, New Jersey, just opened last Saturday… but I’ve already found my “dream gift” for Mother’s Day 2010. Her newest painting in the Mer-Moments series is “Mer-Mom” and it just leaves me weepy. I don’t know if you can see the detail in the photo at left, but it is an absolutely HUGE canvas. The littlest mermaid in the center is sad because her sister ruined her sand castle. It reminds me sooo much of London and Maddie at t

A lot of American children from the past were introduced to a variety of arts as school children. It was typical for students to learn about music through singing and even playing a variety of band instruments in grammar school rather than by having private Cincinnati music lessons . They also used to be introduced to other arts like painting, drawing, sculpture from their art teachers as younger kids

ABC News’Sarah Tobianski reports: What started as a battle of words Monday when President Obama hit back at Republican Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina for saying health care could be Obama’s “Waterloo,” has now turned into a full blown war to rally support and money behind the president’s health care policies.Obama’s “Organizing for America” and MoveOn.org are ramping up their campaigns to curtail – what they say – are the same old Republican “scare tactics and outright lies to stall reform
