Greenpeace Attacks Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony With Their Own Creepy Game Console Scraps

Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics produces a new series of incendiary videos to alert people about how the big video-game system makers need to do more to rid their consoles of toxic chemicals. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have all taken heat from the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics for using toxic chemicals in video-game consoles and other electronics. Now Greenpeace has upped the ante, zooming in on the companies’ excessive use of toxins in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii with a series of videos that turn scraps from the consoles into creepy-looking (yet effective) spokesmen against dangerous substances such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Waxing philosophical with HGTV’s Frontdoor Unlocked

At the Inman News Real Estate Connect Conference in the Big Apple last January, one of my two favorite editors (I only have two if you don’t count Steve, which of course I don’t) cornered me for an impromptu chat about — get this — real estate.  Here is my, thankfully edited, conversation with Annalisa Burgos of HGTV’s Frontdoor.com . So much wisdom in so few words, you are thinking (not)

Philadelphia VA Hospital Brachytherapy Debacle: For The Want of One Competent and Industrious IT Person

This post should perhaps be subtitled “The Theatre of the Absurd.” At Healthcare Renewal and other sites I’ve often commented on the remarkable accommodation given to IT personnel in hospitals, even when these personnel make capricious decisions that are contrary to the support of the mission of healthcare organizations, or contrary to the mission itself. I wrote that many HIT problems observationally appeared due to ill-informed, capricious edicts of overempowered (relative to clinical leadership) MIS leaders, sanctioned by equally ill-informed executive leadership, for which the IT personnel were rarely held accountable.

Publishers Weekly webinar on the Google Book Settlement

Here’s the blurb I received from PW about their webinar. Of course it looks like a pretty one-sided affair on the “pro settlement” side, but it should be interesting nontheless: In a webinar first, the leaders involved with crafting of the Google Library Project Settlement will share with the publishing industry the benefits of the agreement for publishers and authors.

Ignorance of e-books is no excuse for the Orwellian zap: Why Jeff Bezos just might be the McTeague of publishing

Lest you think that we have party lines here at TeleRead, just read Paul Biba’s thoughtful essay below where he depicts Amazon as a dumb giant who happens to do evil things because it doesn’t understand e-books. I disagree somewhat. Not everything about Amazon is evil—the company has its positives, such letting readers speak up in customer reviews—but it undeniably does do evil things

A recent press release by the ACS shows how the digitization of journals is becoming more and more important. As a matter of fact, at least for the ACS, it seems to be what the members prefer.
