Amazon’s purchase of online shoe retailer Zappos was surprising and interesting news all by itself, but now comes a twist: reports that this marriage made in e-commerce heaven may have been a shotgun wedding forced by Zappos’ itchy-fingered venture-capitalist parents. The informed, albeit anonymous, speculation from sources close to the company is that Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh favored remaining independent and moving towards an IPO

As I posted yesterday, the increasingly noisy debate about health care reform in the US has not dealt much with the issues we often discuss on Health Care Renewal. These include problems in how health care organizations are lead which threaten physicians’ and other health care professionals’ core values using tactics including perverse incentives, deception, and intimidation. Last night, however, President Obama held a news conference mostly devoted to health care issues, in which he stressed the importance of changing not just how health insurance works, but how health care decisions are made

A few months ago, we took a look at the CellScope , a tool that turns camera-enabled cell phones and netbooks into handheld microscopes that can diagnose diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. When we originally reported the story, images could only be captured in black and white. Now we’ve received word that the UC Berkeley CellScope project has upgraded the handheld microscope to take color pictures of parasites and bacteria labeled with fluorescent markers

A young designer creates a device for sharing the stories that an heirloom picks up over time. Amina Nazari is a product designer by training, so it makes sense that she was mystified by the things that people don’t need, but nonetheless hang onto because of their sentimental value. Sure, we might attach a story to an heirloom–but what about all the stories of its previous owners, which have been lost to time?

At first glance, the Going Green Film Festival, which claims to be the first film fest to focus solely on green filmmaking, seems reasonable. Films can be submitted only through the festival’s Web site in three categories: Green Production (where a film’s production somehow lessens its carbon footprint), Our Planet (where a film covers third world issues, ecology, nature, or environment) and Hybrid/Alternative Transportation (where a film features a hybrid car, bike, electric scooter, or public transportation)

Right now, everyone who is planning to build electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids pretty much agrees on the fact that the best way to charge them is to plug some kind of cord into the side of the car, the same way we do for cell phones, laptops and MP3 players. Everyone, that is, except for Nissan. Nissan wants to follow the route of the electric toothbrush — that is, invent a way for us to charge EVs (or their EVs, at least), using a wireless charger. Electric toothbrush batteries are refueled by inducing a charge without actually making contact between battery and electricity source. So, too, Nissan hopes that one day we can park electric cars over a scaled-up version of the same charger, and refuel them without lifting a finger. However, there’s a reason that we only use induction chargers for the occasional piece of technology such as the toothbrush, and don’t use them for most mobile electronic devices (ok, with the exception of the Palm Pre ): They take longer to charge, and they are more expensive and complex than a simple wire plug.

The University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center successfully tested a new biofuel, and it may be the key to flying 100% clean flights. Earlier this month, somewhere high above the Mojave Desert, a rocket, powered by a heart-healthy mix of canola and soybean oils, approached the speed of sound and reached an altitude of 20,000 feet–a significant advance for the future of biofuel-fueled flight

I am quite pleased about Hillary Clinton’s five-day visit to India — for one main reason. Her unorthodox itinerary denotes a radical upgrade in US foreign policy towards India from version 1.0 to version 2.0; unlike previous US Secretaries of State, she started off her visit in Mumbai, the economic capital of India, before heading to New Delhi, India’s political capital, to meet with government leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. And yet I think Secretary Clinton can do herself one better

ReadWriteWeb: Michael van Poppel used to be like a lot of young people, trawling the internet for interesting news about the world. Just like many others have considered doing, he created a place where he could post the most interesting news he finds, as fast as he can. Today he’s one of the most-watched movers and shakers in online news media – and he’s not yet twenty years old.

Your audience may know more about you than you think they do – or they may know nothing about you at all – both could be bad news! A couple of weeks ago I was seeking affiliate partners for another project for offline business owners. I connected with a man who was well connected within the community and new that if I could have his help I would be more productive in reaching my ideal clients.

Politico offers readers what it calls a “peek inside the [Obama administration's PR] playbook,” revealing that this particular White House disseminates its messages via “the town hall-style meeting,” “the major address,” “the solo prime time news conference,” “interviews,” and, “the personal note” (Obama wows and woos with references to pop culture and family). About this crafty “do interviews” tactic:…
