Blanket judgment

OK, I know this is nothing to be proud of, but I see that some random UK tabloid agrees with my theory that Macauley Culkin fathered one of Michael Jackson’s kids. Admittedly, I thought that Culkin fathered the two older kids, and The Sun posits that Culkin sired Blanket, but still, I think I have a future in this business.

All ears

My friend cut his ear while shaving this morning. He won’t allow me to use his real name in this blog post, so I’ll just refer to him as “Vincent.” He said he wants to send it to someone “ear mail,” so at least Vinnie retains a sense of humor about things, despite the nasty scrape. I wish I could find my all-time favorite cartoon, which was old 30 years ago, so it’s super old now: a literal interpretation of figures of speech

Sunburnt! Solar Security Systems Prevent Burglars From Snatching Solar Panels

Talk about economic indicators: Solar panels are growing in popularity, but thanks to the shrinking economy, the pricey electricity generators have become a popular target for thieves in California. Wait, it gets even more surreal: Napa wineries ZD Wines and Honig Vineyard have each lost $40,000 worth of solar panels in the past year–mostly, police say, by locals who want to use the devices for massive marijuana growing operations.

Innovations in Health Care as Simple as Picking Up the Phone

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has created a program that allows patients or their families to call in a rapid-response team when they need emergency attention. It’s saving lives–and probably money. In this modern age, we have become used to thinking about innovation as the domain of the iterative tinkerer, the weapon of choice for wizards who stay up late to make smaller, faster, cooler circuits and systems

Drinking toilet water and other solutions to U.S. water woes

This week, questions about the future of our water supply got the celebrity treatment: a feature on “The Daily Show.” Robert Glennon, a professor of law and public policy at the University of Arizona, went on the show to talk about his new book, Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What to Do About It . Like it or not, having Jon Stewart cover an issue you care deeply about is the modern equivalent of Walter Cronkite reporting it on “The CBS Evening News.” It means it has arrived as an issue of national significance.

Evidence-Based Management and Education – The Obama Dilemma

The US push toward improved education needs to be careful. As I read simultaneously about the $4.35 billion Race to the Top fund and the rise of evidence-based management, I see a discontinuity. The top bullet in the Department of Education’s release says: “Adopting internationally benchmarked standards and assessments that prepare students for success in college and the workplace.” From what I am reading about evidence-based management from my friend Bob Sutton and his college Jeff Pfeiffer, is, and I agree, the need for scientifically valid experiments that prove what is right and wrong

Texas to Host Biggest U.S. Offshore Wind Farm, but T. Boone Pickens Isn’t Involved

Move over T. Boone Pickens, your grand Texas wind farm dreams have been overtaken by energy start-up Baryonyx, which has won bids for three land leases–two offshore, and one in the Texas Panhandle–to build data centers in Texas powered by massive wind farms. Well, That’s the End of Flip: iPods to Get Cameras

There’s no hard news on the actual devices themselves yet, but a bunch of Chinese protective cases for the next-gen iPod touch and Nano reveal they’re both getting digital camera units. And that, basically, is the end of the line for Flip. The manufacturers were told the relative dimensions of the upcoming iPod refresh back in May, and it’s apparently such reliable information that they’ve begun churning out their third-party cases already, in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Suicidally Fast Company: Watch This Daredevil Ride a Rollercoaster–on Rollerblades

Dirk Auer already holds the 190-mph record for rollerblading speed. And he just set another record, hurtling around a 2,800 foot roller coaster track. High speeds don’t intimidate Dirk Auer, even if the only thing keeping him from bouncing across the ground like a skipping stone is a set of three inch wheels

The theme is green at eco-friendly dinner parties

Summer brunch or dinner parties are a great way to spend time with friends new and old, enjoy healthy food , allow the kids a change in pace, and a great excuse to share your eco-domestic lifestyle with others. Brunches are particularly nice because they can include children and adults alike whereas dinner parties, because they are taking place close to or after bedtime, are more adult-oriented.

Mattel’s new line of characters, creatures, and vehicles licensed from James Cameron’s highly awaited 3-D opus will come to life on-screen–your screen. Anticipation for James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi adventure Avatar has been at a fevered pitch for seemingly forever, and cinephiles and geeks everywhere now have less than five months to see if it lives up to the hype (it’s scheduled to open December 18, 2009). What President Obama Will Learn at Cleveland Clinic About Health Care

President Obama may have taken some heat for his interest in judicial empathy, but a smart take on empathy might just be the Rx for health care. The Cleveland Clinic, where Obama is spending time today, hopes to lead the way. The President has set out a broad agenda for health care reform, with “patient-centered” medicine as a major touchstone.

Where can science fiction possibly go when real-life headlines proclaim that researchers have created LED lightbulbs from salmon DNA? University of Connecticut researchers have added fluorescent dye to salmon DNA and spun the DNA strands into nanofibers to create a brand new material that gives off a bright white light. A LED light is coated with the DNA nanofibers, and voila, a salmon DNA lightbulb is born.

Solar installation made simple

The fact is, a lot of people out there could benefit greatly from solar power.  Government incentives are at an all time high, solar panels are becoming cheaper and better, and solar installation professionals abound.  So why isn’t demand as high as it should be? Simple: Government incentives vary a great deal from state to state, and many potential customers don’t fully understand how they work.  Some don’t know which panels are best for them.  And who knows how to find a reliable solar installer?  Some might install a great system, but others might build you a $40,000 piece of junk! So while numerous start-ups are working on improving PV technology itself, companies like Global Solar Center are trying to make the purchasing process more user-friendly.
