IOP: I hate it when they do that

The ever-vigilant BigCityLib has spotted some revisionism by the Institute of Physics: they have silently updated their “clarification”: the link http://www.iop.org/News/news_40679.html now points to a statement dated 5th March, instead of the original, which was 2nd march. What a bunch of slimy little toads: they pretend to believe in openness, they won’t tell us who wrote their statements, then they silently airbrush out embarassing words afterwards

Churchill is a Myth – so Say 1 in 4 Brits

According to many bloggers feeding off a London Daily Mail survey, 25% of Britons believe that Winston Churchill did not really exist. According to the report, ‘Likewise, they think historical figures such as Florence Nightingale, Sir Walter Raleigh, Mahatma Gandhi and Cleopatra were also fictional personalities created for literature or films. On the other hand, they believe Sherlock Holmes was a real person.’ But don’t worry these publicly educated geniuses have plenty of time to watch reality TV, listen to Oprah, or dance to Britney.

VA / DoD EHR Interface Debacle: Will It Take the Luminosity Of A Dozen Supernovas To Shed Light On The Obvious About Healthcare IT?

The VA and DoD have been working for a number of years on interfacing the VistA EHR system and the military’s EHR, AHLTA (why anyone would want to interface to AHLTA in its present state is of concern to me, but…) [ Note: this is not to denigrate the military, and I am very thankful to all who serve and defend our country and freedoms. HIT problems seem unfortunately universal - ed. ] The interface attempt, likely done by the usual actors in the traditional “business IT” manner has resulted in the predictable: Glitch prompts VA to shut e-health data exchange with Defense NextGov.com By Bob Brewin 03/04/2010 The Veterans Affairs Department closed off access to the Defense Department’s huge electronic health record system on Monday because it found errors in some patients’ medical data clinicians downloaded from the Defense network, according to a departmental patient safety alert, which Nextgov obtained.

The flurry of activity on LinkedIn, as folks made a batch of new connections, gave a clue that there was news. Later, the Alliance@IBM/CWA web site started reporting that a IBM was going through a series of layoffs. “Resource action” is the neologism that’s used to when they’re trying to get you to believe that it’s about something more important than the fact that you’re losing your job.

Recycle your gold into a handcrafted piece of jewelry!

I just cast my first gold ingot!  This is great news, and I am very excited to announce that I can recycle your existing silver or gold into a new piece of jewelry! This saves us both a pretty penny from the refiners. I am Very Happy =) I really really like the idea of having recycled metal.  I feel this is the way into the future.  My current supplies of sterling silver and gold are made from recycled metals, meaning that they aren’t newly mined.  This is the wave of the future, this is necessary.  I really feel that mining more of the pristine areas is not in the best interested of the planet. I am anxiously awaiting an email from my copper and brass supplier to find out what their recycled content is.  I think that these metals aren’t recycled as regularly as the more expensive metals.  Although they are recycled regularly through scrap yards.  I am really hoping that they turn out to be recycled, but if they are not, I will make every effort to find metal that is
