What do Freelancers Write for Fun? – Taking a Break from Paid Writing Jobs

Most freelance writers are very busy.  As freelancers, we’re small business owners, which means we do a lot more than write.  We have to be marketers, accountants, sales people, supply managers, customer service representatives, and so much more!  All of those tasks doesn’t leave much time for writing for pleasure. However, it’s important that you take some time once a week or even once a month (more often if you can) to sit down at your keyboard or with pen and paper in hand and just write for no other reason than to have fun

What the IRS Doesn’t Know Won’t Hurt It

I’ve heard it said so many times that I can’t keep track of it: what you don’t know won’t hurt you.  For some, ignorance is bliss.  Maybe in some cases, this can be true.  However, if you project this kind of thinking to the IRS, you might find yourself in deep trouble. How many times have you been tempted to NOT report income because you think that the IRS will not be able to track it anyway?  Perhaps your best friend might have told you – if you can get away with not reporting something, why not?  Or maybe another freelance writer has shared experiences wherein he/she did not report part of his/her earnings and didn’t have any trouble. Do you really want to risk it?  If anyone can track an individual’s earnings, it’s the IRS.  What the IRS doesn’t know may not hurt it, but it will probably hurt you.  In fact, I’d go as far as to say that what the IRS doesn’t know just might make it even more curious.

Parallel Structure in Writing

Parallel structure, or parallelism, is a basic concept that students learn in writing class.  Over the years, we may forget the term, but the idea should continue to be applied.  Whether you are writing for your personal blog or for a big client, avoiding faulty parallelism can help you get your point across more clearly. I think parallelism comes naturally to most people.  As humans who appreciate beauty and balance, we easily detect if something is off.  Take a look at this sentence: I like to play soccer and swimming. You don’t need to spend minutes going over that sentence to realize that something does not match!  It’s one example of faulty parallelism.  Here’s a better way to write the sentence: I like to play soccer and swim.

If you follow me on Twitter, then you may have already seen the great list of the 100 most commonly misspelled words that I tweeted yesterday.  YourDictionary.com put together the list and it’s filled with words that most people have trouble spelling. Freelance Writing Back to School – Time to Get Back to Writing Basics

I wrote a post today over at Performancing.com called Blogging Back to School , and I thought it was a good topic to talk about here on Freelance Writing Jobs, too.  With all the kids heading back into the halls of learning at this time of year, many freelancer writers have a bit more time each day to work and catch up on all the things we had to push down on the list of priorities while our kids were home on summer vacation. It’s also a good time to think about writing basics!  The English language has taken on a variety of nuances throughout the past century, and as writers, we’re often put in the precarious position of writing the way people speak (i.e., the way they’re comfortable hearing words and phrases) versus the way we know is grammatically correct.  Even editors at major magazines and publishing houses struggle with the basics sometimes. There are two criteria I use to help me navigate between being grammatically correct and not sounding like a robotic text book: Consider the audience

Can I Make Money Blogging? – Does This Close the Door to More "Reputable" Writing Opportunities?

Dear Jodee, I’ve been writing for magazines for a long time, but with the print media struggling to retain readers gigs are harder to get, so I thought I’d investigate writing for on-line sources. From reading e-books and “pro” Blogger sites it seemed that a reasonable income could be earned this way. Some of the professional writer sites (not just bloggers) decry the skill levels of most Blogger forums and state that participating in them will actually hurt a good writer’s ability to get assignments from more reputable publishers.

Help! I’m Dating a Client!

I don’t know about you guys, but freelancing is an awful lot like online dating for me. For you married people out there or–worse yet–those of you who are happy being single, dating is this thing that you do when you meet a person and then you agree to talk to them over drinks. Then you decide whether you want to see them again or not (which is usually with a frequency of next to never) and then you go home and eat a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and contemplate life plans that involve paying extra for rent
