The last time I scoured the web for “ Write for Us ” pages, the ensuing post was very well received. It’s not always easy to find some of the hidden markets – even though the web is filled with them. Doing a web search for “write for us” helped me to land some very lucrative opportunities and I’ve been recommending this method of searching for years. I know you’ve all been clamoring for more “Write for Us” pages, and I will continue to bring them to you as often as I can. Please note, it’s a frustrating and long process as many of the “Write for Us” pages on the web are non-paying opportunities and there’s a lot to go through

Every office needs a coffee table. Whether it’s to hold meetings with clients around, spread out potential magazines for querying on or to simply have somewhere to rest your feet during your mid-morning break, a coffee table has a variety of uses. Unlike my previous two posts (how to build a desk and a bookcase ), I haven’t actually made this coffee table myself.

Sometimes I sit down to write the introductions to these weekly wrap-ups, and I’ll try to think of some funny way to describe why you or I might not have seen this week’s posts. This week, however, I don’t really have to try to find a reason, because I’ve been frantically launching my Question the Rules course

For those aren’t aware, I recently put out an offer for free one-on-one coaching for one freelance writer who was ready to leave content mills behind to pursue a more serious business. The responses were inspiring — from truly great writers who were tired of being told they should be happy and / or proud to work for mills, people with outstanding credentials who could be doing so much more. Sadly, I only have time now to work directly with one writer.

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” ~William Morris, poet and designer Imagine the household you would have if you got rid of every item that was neither useful or beautiful. Gone would be the plastic doodad with no known purpose, the ugly frame your great-aunt gave you, the Special Free Offer™ you never opened, the collection of someday-useful peanut butter jars . . .

The Two Vital Attributes of Quality Content
A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from Bright Hub (a content mill I used to write for) inviting me to help them write some 60 titles for a private client commission for about $20 a pop. Another content mill, Demand Studios, recently partnered with USA Today to start providing travel tips for their website. To some writers, these partnerships and commissions are clearly a sign that the freelance writing sky is falling and we are all going to have to be happy working for pennies before you know it

Every once in awhile, someone asks me why I have pink hair. (You ever notice that no one asks why anyone has blonde hair, or red hair? But pink, it seems, requires a good reason.) There are a lot of ways I could answer that question, but the simplest is probably that I don’t really buy into the standard set of rules about what “success” or “professionalism” look like.
