The Big, Awkward Problem of YouTube Fees

YouTube has become our national trove of free video, a place where a company can find a free platform for video marketing junk and individuals can watch dogs sleepwalk. But as we’ve discussed before , the Web’s video giant costs Google an unsustainable amount of money each year, regardless of the paltry revenue the site has earned from advertising. So the conversation continues: how does Google make YouTube profitable without killing the service we know and love?

On the future of print journalism

The afternoon edition of The Gardner News carried just a small wire service story, below the fold, with a Dallas dateline, that said that President Kennedy had been shot. By the time that I read that paper, on November 22nd, 1963, we’d already heard the news on the school’s PA system and we were sent home early. For the next bunch of days, the TV stayed on, mostly tuned to CBS where we watched Walter Cronkite as he guided us through that wrenching time

Again, Logical Fallacies in Defense of Conflicts of Interest: a Rebuttal to Rothman et al Appears in JACC

Earlier this year, a remarkable commentary in JAMA suggested major reconsideration of the relationships among professional medical associations (PMAs) and health care corporations.(1) Because of the influence of PMAs on clinical care, education, research, and policy, Rothman et al suggested that these organizations sever most of their financial ties to corporations such as pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies. The authors suggested that the only acceptable payments to PMAs from these companies are those for advertising in publications that is clearly labeled as such, and advertising exhibits in meetings, again that is clearly labeled. Furthermore, the authors suggested that people with current or recent (within the last two years) relationships with such corporations ought not to serve as officers or trustees of PMAs, and ought not to serve on program or practice guideline committees

[CAMERA] Use a transparent prim to get close-up effects

Second Life’s camera controls have a world of tips & tricks unto themselves. Many of them are enlisted by photographers and machinimatographers (what a mouthful) to achieve a range from more natural shots to wild, experimental effects. While World menu > Zoom In (also the Camera View Angle slider in Viewer 1.23 ) can be used to do close-up, almost “macro”-style photography, another way to approach subjects with “sniper-vision” is to use a fully- or semi-transparent prim and zoom in .

The Importance of Blog Design

Blogs have increased popularity over this past months.  Many people have started to create their personal blogs to express their thoughts and feelings.  Internet companies have also started their blogs to inform consumers on the latest product news and reviews. Because of this, blogs are also being used as internet marketing media.  Before, internet marketing is done by placing banners and links on popular websites, such as news and information sites.  Links were also included on newsletters and

Building Your Personal Brand… or Not?

One of my favorite blogs, Web Worker Daily , recently featured a series of posts about the necessity (or not) of developing a personal brand . I know that every solopreneur struggles with this, whether it’s viewed as a fun aspect of being in business for yourself… or an uncomfortable marketing necessity. The posts delve into the obvious questions, asking about the level of self-expression (or self- exposure , depending on your point of view) needed to achieve a branding or marketing goal.

Saint Leo University – Building a successful campus community in Second Life

Saint Leo University is based in Florida and has a very active Center for Online Learning that allows students to pursue degree programs regardless of physical location.  Saint Leo recently celebrated their 1 year anniversary in Second Life, and I had the privilege to speak to their students, faculty and friends at a celebration event held on their Second Life campus. I thought it would be fun to interview the main person responsible for Saint Leo University’s continuing presence in Second Life and use it as an opportunity to share his experiences and best practices with the larger education community.  In true University fashion, we met at a funky Coffee Shop located on one of Saint Leo’s three islands in Second Life

If it’s not in this one, it may be in the next…

As knowledge workers (OHAI DRUCKER), a lot of what our Documentation Team does involves not just making Second Life stuff easier to learn, but easier to find . It’s the type of thing that, going in, may not seem like such a big deal: but with hindsight and plenty of repeated experience, you become intimately familiar with the most popular questions . Like “How do I make money?” and “Where do I get a job?” (Which is echoed offline, showing as fantastic as some aspects of SL are, some concerns are universal.) I’ve also become well-acquainted with ways to gather info and save time

The New American Post-Industrial Microenterprise

In a small garage in Cedar Park, Texas outside of Austin, there is the start of a new company that reflects an emerging trend in small business. Russell Andersen is using the post-industrial refuse of America’s computer-aided manufacturing revolution to create a new type of microenterprise–one that is built around aging high-tech tools and very niche markets enabled by Internet-based social networks and GAAP accounting. He is using a fully-depreciated, 20-plus-year-old CNC (computer-numeric-controlled) milling machine he sourced from Craigslist for less than one-tenth of its cost new, and he’s running it with equally antiquated computer hardware and software

When Donors Unwittingly Subsidize Corruption and Ignore Collective Action

There are seminars you attend and you leave both depressed and inspired. Last week, I attended a seminar on the rules of the game – how things really work not how they are supposed to work – governing two sectors in an African country: forestry and wild life management
