At its very core, marketing is storytelling. The best advertising campaigns take us on an emotional journey–appealing to our wants, needs and desires–while at the same time telling us about a product or service. A brand’s story comes from the company’s own information, and if successful, it is accepted and integrated into the consumer’s story

This week, questions about the future of our water supply got the celebrity treatment: a feature on “The Daily Show.” Robert Glennon, a professor of law and public policy at the University of Arizona, went on the show to talk about his new book, Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What to Do About It . Like it or not, having Jon Stewart cover an issue you care deeply about is the modern equivalent of Walter Cronkite reporting it on “The CBS Evening News.” It means it has arrived as an issue of national significance.

Summer brunch or dinner parties are a great way to spend time with friends new and old, enjoy healthy food , allow the kids a change in pace, and a great excuse to share your eco-domestic lifestyle with others. Brunches are particularly nice because they can include children and adults alike whereas dinner parties, because they are taking place close to or after bedtime, are more adult-oriented.

Amazon’s purchase of online shoe retailer Zappos was surprising and interesting news all by itself, but now comes a twist: reports that this marriage made in e-commerce heaven may have been a shotgun wedding forced by Zappos’ itchy-fingered venture-capitalist parents. The informed, albeit anonymous, speculation from sources close to the company is that Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh favored remaining independent and moving towards an IPO

As I posted yesterday, the increasingly noisy debate about health care reform in the US has not dealt much with the issues we often discuss on Health Care Renewal. These include problems in how health care organizations are lead which threaten physicians’ and other health care professionals’ core values using tactics including perverse incentives, deception, and intimidation. Last night, however, President Obama held a news conference mostly devoted to health care issues, in which he stressed the importance of changing not just how health insurance works, but how health care decisions are made

*pretends that there are few visitors reading this entry* For the record, this is my nth blog….Finally, I’ve chosen a blog service where I can freely and anonymously post my thoughts— for good….I actually tried creating this journal first on a quite popular blog hosting site, but I realized that nothing beats LJ for its features and awesomeness. And this will be my home, for good….I’ve got lots of stories to share, but I’m not that expressive in person, that’s why I always resort to blogging….
These massive crochet mandalas from artist, Xenobia Bailey , have left me breathless. They are part of an exhibit of Bailey’s work at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Originally from Seattle, Washington, and now living in Harlem, New York, Xenobia Bailey brings African American roots music into visual terms with vibrant room-sized installations of crocheted mandalas, tents, and costumes.

We have posted on a variety of settlements of cases alleging health care fraud, but this one has a new twist, as reported by the NY Times, New York State and New York City officials agreed this week to repay the federal government for more than half a billion dollars in improper Medicaid claims, averting a potential court battle but adding more red ink to the state’s and city’s finances. The settlement, which federal officials said was the largest recovery of Medicaid funds in history, ends a lengthy dispute with the federal government over whether school districts around the state improperly sought Medicaid payments for speech therapy and other services dating to the early 1990s. Under the agreement, which was announced Tuesday, the city will repay about $100 million

I am quite pleased about Hillary Clinton’s five-day visit to India — for one main reason. Her unorthodox itinerary denotes a radical upgrade in US foreign policy towards India from version 1.0 to version 2.0; unlike previous US Secretaries of State, she started off her visit in Mumbai, the economic capital of India, before heading to New Delhi, India’s political capital, to meet with government leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. And yet I think Secretary Clinton can do herself one better
