I was sent forth through the power and I have come to those who contemplate me. I was found by those who sought after me. Look upon me, you who contemplate me and you listeners, listen to me.

Alla Malova, an Elder Economic Security Initiative Intern, wraps up her two-part series on emotional support for elders. Old age, especially when combined with poverty, is associated with a painful stigma in American society.

Since I got hold of this from the finestdefmix blog I’ve been in love with it. Lush strings, great piano from Terry Burrus, that unmistakeable voice. I did my own fusion of it almost immediately, but the sound quality wasn’t great (low bitrate) and I knew it deserved better

The Teeth Whitening Money Miracle! Today I stumbled across the bizarrely named website TeethWhiteningHerald.com – which did have the courtesy to tell me it was an “ADVERTISEMENT” – although for what I'm not sure. On the one hand we're told the story of “Jessica”, a native of Columbia, MD who confesses that, “As a smoker and a regular coffee drinker, I have embarrassing yellow stains on my teeth.” She then vaguely hints at some sort of 2-step teeth whitening process and ends her story by saying, “”I started getting compliments everywhere I went, my friends thought I had gone and paid for laser teeth whitening.” Apparently her story inspired a lot of people… …to start making money on GOOGLE! HUH??? Here's a screenshot showing the transition from the end of Jessica's story to the comments section: Thanks Jessica! Now I can whiten my teeth AND make money on GOOGLE.

A hardware roundup – The Entry Level Build! I have seen different sites put together a list of potential HTPC hardware for budgets under $1000 USD. While many of these sites are showcasing some nice systems, I think there are multiple ways to approach this project. As such, I put together my own list for a potential HTPC build while offering some options to hit different price points — entry level, mainstream/mid level and higher end systems — each less than $1000 USD. So here’s the first part of the series: The Entry Level Build. For me, there are two things that drive my decision process when making a component selection for an HTPC; product performance/features and cost. I want technology that will offer good performance, aimed at the HTPC space, yet will not “break the bank”. As I outlined in my previous blogs, the HTPC does not require the absolute highest performance products, nor should it be about buying the cheapest products.

OK, maybe butterfly mind is too flattering a description. Maybe a more accurate one would be: concentration span somewhere between that of a gnat and a goldfish.

Congrats to our Minnesota partner, the Minnesota Women’s Consortium . Kristen, our Elder Economic Security Initiative intern, writes about the reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Authorization Act and why this piece of legislation is important for elders. Law makers are discussing opportunities to improve public transit through the Surface Transportation Authorization Act of 2009. The legislation which delegates funding and transportation priorities for the United States is up for reauthorization.

Helping Elders Meet Their Transportation Needs
Borders, like time, have always seemed a little silly to me. They’re merely constructs, real only because we agree to consider them so. At the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, established in 1932, Canada and the United States decided to agree otherwise for one segment of the line on the map dividing them

On the Road Again – Post 10: Glaciers
I’m not really a fan of those historical tours you can take in almost every city and town. For one thing, they’re typically conducted in modes of transportation either so cute it makes your teeth ache (e.g., locomotives like the kiddie trains at amusement parks, double-decker buses, trolley cars, and so forth, all of them inevitably red) or so uncomfortable you soon believe it would be altogether better simply to throw yourself through the window (e.g., noisy diesel buses with cramped, high-backed seats molded to allow only one totally disagreeable sitting position).

On the Road Again – Post 9: Boom Town
This week, we feature a post from our intern, Alla, on the importance of elder’s emotional state during these tough economic times and ways elders can participate in their communities while aging in place with dignity. Stay tuned for an upcoming post next week that will discuss this in greater detail.

Spotlight on Supporting Elders: A Phone Call Makes a Difference
Lean Back Technology for your HTPC! So, you’ve got this fancy new HTPC, but how do you use it? Well, I thought we would take a look at the various options for controlling your HTPC. I am splitting this post into a two part series covering both keyboard and mice solutions in the first post while wand style remotes will be featured in the second post . Like previous posts on technology, products covered are limited to what I had immediately available — not intended to cover all the different options out there. Likewise, this is not intended to be a review of all the different solutions, just an introduction to a few available products. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a few of these different solutions for testing thanks to our technology partners. As such, I brought these devices home for a brief period so I could see how my family liked them. I know, I said I should never use my family as beta testers, but this seemed a little different and I felt it would be more useful to provide their feedback in addition to mine to provide a wider cross section of user experiences. More about their responses later on.

Anyone Seen the Remote? (Part 1 on Controlling your HTPC)
I know, I know, I went quiet again. I had proofs to go through on The Secret Shopper Unwrapped which took longer than expected, and then copy edits on my rewrites of my first novel, Old School Ties. I’ve just finished both which is a huge relief and that means I can devote the rest of August to my Experiment (well, and to sunbathing and getting my fat writer’s bum to the gym)
When a personal computer comes to exceed the capacity required by a single person, machines will “seek” new ways to spend their leisure time. And leisure time is not to be underestimated as either a cultural or an evolutionary force. The first is to take on more complex tasks enabling a new kind of user experience.
