With the passage of health care reform, and the shift of the medical profession away from private practice and toward large institutions already, I wanted to revisit some data about the political orientation of medical students and recent graduates surveyed in the mid-aughts. One of the major issues among American elites has been the occupational bifurcation politically between liberals and conservatives, with the former concentrated in the professions which are often affiliated with the mana…

easter nostalgia

Reading Jeana Marie’s post about dyeing easter eggs with onion skins and silk with her daughters gave me a pang, and I dug out these ancient eggs. The two large ones are goose eggs, and they are at least 24 years old.

The Wisdom of Jacques Necker: A Note on "The Road from Ruin"

If there is one historical personage that all finance ministers – or treasury secretaries – need to know, he is Jacques Necker (1732-1804). He was the finance minister of France in the 1780s. He was credited with popularizing the phrase ‘public opinion’ ( opinion publique )

Jack of all Trades

It’s been a busy month.  In the last two weeks I’ve changed the oil in both the family vehicles, installed a stereo in my truck, repaired my lawnmower so I could cut that first fresh spring grass (okay, weeds), and I’ve been working with my 5 year old son on his reading skills.  Come to think of it, I also did some plumbing work, re-installed the operating system on my home theater PC and probably a dozen other small projects.  My wife lovingly calls me a jack of all trades.  I was thinking about this when reading the first round of hardware reviews on the recently launched AMD 890GX chipset.  There was a reason I was immediately fond of this new platform… like me, it is a jack of all trades.  It defies categorization. “The AMD 890 GX chipset put simply is a great addition to the already impressive AMD chipset line.”  -Tony Chartrand / Bjorn3D The features and new technology on these motherboards enable an amazingly wide range of uses.  Video capability is obviously the most visible aspect of a computer’s prowess you’ll experience (and judge).  A recurring statement in reviews is that the ATI Radeon™ HD 4290 graphics core in the AMD 890GX chipset may be one of, if not the most powerful, integrated graphics solutions on the market.  Even so, AMD has worked to maintain the same overall power thresholds. “Our testing also showed the AMD 890GX to be a solid performer in light of the company’s previous chipset offerings, and it was a capable overclocker as well.

Say “Hey” to San Diego Castles Realty’s Newest Agents!

more beautiful than it is possible for me to say

I have kept journals since my 3rd child was born in 1985 – that’s 25 years. They saved family dialog, domestic and world events, dreams, ideas, and notes on what I read. In the past, I’ve used journal pages to back fabrics for the english method of paper piecing.
