Crochet Art Exhibit From Xenobia Bailey

These massive crochet mandalas from artist, Xenobia Bailey , have left me breathless. They are part of an exhibit of Bailey’s work at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Originally from Seattle, Washington, and now living in Harlem, New York, Xenobia Bailey brings African American roots music into visual terms with vibrant room-sized installations of crocheted mandalas, tents, and costumes.

Julia Caprara School of Textile Arts

I received an email yesterday from Winy Smit with a link to the new Julia Caprara School of Textile Arts website. This website is only one page so far, but getting it up and running demonstrates the professional commitment of the RE-organization. Fellow student Chistine Spencer’s blog gave me some insight into recent grads of the degree program and following her advice, I searched for Susie Vickery and found her website.

Esoteric Programming Language For Embroidery

Japanese artists’ Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi have created an “esoteric” programming language called Pa++ern that translates input from visitors to their exhibit or from virtual visitors through Twitter and turns them in to graphics that can be embroidered on t-shirts. Visitors to the gallery enjoy the movement and sounds of this highly used but rarely seen machines and can choose to operate them or witness how they are controlled by virtual visitors using twitter to send their Pa++ern program; an esoteric experience in itself. Their Pa++ern program will be on display at the Beams Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.

Fluid Sculpture Dress at Maker Faire

Here’s one of the pieces I was looking forward to seeing at Maker Faire this year. Rachel Hobson managed to snap a few photos, and I got to meet the creator of this fluid-pumping dress made from surgical tubing . From the Casual Profanity site: There was one question I got frequently that is worth answering, and that is: “how did you think of this”?

It’s fun to try to guess exactly what you are looking at in the picture above, and it’s mind-blowing to discover what it actually is and hear the story behind the artist who created it. Jeffery Ruddell shares a beautiful story of one man’s urge to create, and his artwork that comes from a most unlikely medium. Amazon Censorship

In case you were under a rock or celebrating Easter or something today, and haven't heard about the AmazonFail brouhaha, here's what they're up to: Amazon has, ostensibly for the sake of their readers delicate constitutions, decided to strip the rankings from pretty much any book that has to do with anything related to the LGBT community, everything from textbooks to literature to scientific studies, whether those books include explicit descriptions of homosexual acts or not. This prevents those books from showing up in general searches and will ultimately hurt their sales figures.
