easter nostalgia

Reading Jeana Marie’s post about dyeing easter eggs with onion skins and silk with her daughters gave me a pang, and I dug out these ancient eggs. The two large ones are goose eggs, and they are at least 24 years old.

more beautiful than it is possible for me to say

I have kept journals since my 3rd child was born in 1985 – that’s 25 years. They saved family dialog, domestic and world events, dreams, ideas, and notes on what I read. In the past, I’ve used journal pages to back fabrics for the english method of paper piecing.

art rental

The house is full of art because yesterday I took 8 paintings out of the Art gallery of Sudbury’s art rental program. They had been in there for over a year and I wanted to refresh the work. (with two pieces) I had a conversation with Krysta Talenko, the over worked young curator, then went shopping for blouses

self: blue robe

I spent most of last spring and early summer stitching this piece. Even though it had a million hours in it, it was not visually successful. Yesterday I brought the back to the front by rolling it onto itself and voila, the protective red thread frame sets off the isolated domestic image

Glyphs and Ampersands and Rubrics! Oh My!

One of the things that often gets sacrificed to the beautiful regularity of type is the quirky individuality of handwriting, with its swashes, ligatures, and shorthand. Early medieval books copied in Latin were full of abbreviations, rubrics, and illuminated capitals that printers like Caxton tried to emulate, while making their books and broadsides more legible.

bahama stitching

stitched outside this morning, this was the view. For these eight inch wide samples, I’m using a method of layering onto a foundation fabric that is then cut away. Leaving just the stitched line gives a very strong yet light weight result.

Mr. Filian – you will be missed.

Hrant Ruben Filian December 17, 1922 March 4, 2010 If I were to tell you the widest and most heroic tales and stories about life, love and the pursuit of the American dream, then I would be telling you stories about Hrant Filian – my father-in-law. I am saddened that he passed away this morning but grateful that he did not suffer and that he was only sick for a very short time.
