I went on a search for all the verses of “The Diehards”, a poem by Ruth Pitter published in 1941 in a book of her poems called “The Rude Potato”. I had read little snippets taken from the poem, which often show up when you search for quotes on gardening, including: “We go, in winter’s biting wind, On many a short-lived winter day, With aching back but willing mind To dig and double dig the clay
The finance ministry may put on hold the final phase of its two-year-old road map that was meant to give complete freedom to public sector banks (PSB) to choose their statutory central auditors. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the audit standard setting and regulatory body, has been opposing the ‘autonomy’ move from the very beginning, as it felt that by giving the banks the powers to choose their auditors, the government was weakening the auditor’s powers to make critical observations against the PSBs

The same ground-ball disability discrimination case passes through our firm every three months. It usually unfolds like this – a potential client calls and informs us that he or she is ineligible for FMLA leave and is being told that his or her position will not be held open if he or she opts for a short leave to accommodate the need for medical treatment for a chronic disability

Home buyers in South Indian states could be deprived of benefit of 75% abatement granted by the government with regard to service tax on construction activity, introduced in the last Budget. This is because unlike in north Indian states, the cost of house does not include the value of land in southern states. In South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, the value of land is not included in the value of the house but taken in advance at the booking time itself.

A (very) brief History (my own personal understanding, not taken from any particular historical source) Inequality of pay between the sexes stems right back to the first time it became acceptable for women to work and earn a salary. With the tragedy and carnage of the first and second world wars and the oppression of the economic crisis which followed, came a ray of light for female liberation. The tragic loss of huge swathes of a generation of male workers left much work to be done, very few male workers to do it and a generation of single women without husbands to support them, who needed to work. Prior to the unique labour market created by the Great War and Second WW, it was generally frowned upon for women to work. “Suitable” professions for a single female were limited to roles such as teaching. Society rejected the idea that a married woman should need or want to work at all and it was not generally seen as acceptable for single females needing to support themselves financially to “take” the job of a man who had a family to support.

Todays BBC Breakfast program claimed that there are an estimated 15,000 incompetent teachers in schools. Defending the claim as unfounded and irresponsible, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the teachers union, struck back at the BBC arguing that claims such as these create a witch hunt of teachers and condemn and undermine the whole profession. Whilst the accuracy of the statement is no doubt open to debate, the real question is: if teachers are incompetent, why is that incompetency not being challenged? Why are performance management procedures not being followed to rectify the problem? When dealing with incompetency employers should first check their own disciplinary procedure and initially try to resolve the issue informally. If this doesnt work, the performance issues should be raised with the employee and the employer should give the employee the opportunity to explain any underlying cause of their poor performance. Usually an employee must be given several opportunities to improve before any decision to dismiss is made. Only 18 UK teachers have been struck off for incompetence in the past 40 years. This statistic alone tends to suggest that performance management is not being properly tackled. It is difficult to comprehend that, given the number of teachers, so few have been found to be incompetent in that period. Many large employers will deal with several performance management procedures and dismissals each year. Perhaps the BBC can produce evidence to back up its claims in the Panorama documentary on the subject tonight Do you think performance management is properly tackled in your industry/profession?
