My Commenters Is Smarter Than Me: The Purpose of Education

I’ve always thought insight is best defined as noting something obvious that everyone else overlooked. In the comments of this post about an article by Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus which argued that universities need to return to their core mission of education, ecologist notes a key point: Education is not, and should not be, the core mission of the university. The core mission of the university is scholarship.

Dr. Don Berwick’s “Patient-Centered” Medicine

There’s been a bit of buzz in the health blogs over President Obama’s decision last week to use the mechanism of a recess appointment to be the director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Recess appointments, for those who may not be aware, allow a President to put a nominee in place when Congress is in recess in order to have him in place without the messy process of having him approved by the Senate. True, the Senate still has to approve a recess appointment by the end…

The Hottest Restaurant in Paris

A lot of us étrangers (and there are some pretty étrange étrangers here..) bemoan the lack of heat and spiciness in the ethnic fare served up, because a good number of the locals have a hard time dealing with the heavily-spiced dishes that our all-American constitutions have no trouble handling. We, The People, have cast-iron stomachs and have become a nation of full-tilt eaters, relishing and exalting things that we can take to the extreme.

Were MMORPGs The First Social Media Platform?

For the uninitiated, Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs for short) are a type of computer game that is played over the Internet with a large number of fellow players who take on character roles in a fantasy or science-fiction based universe.  The most well-known and commonly referenced MMORPG is Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft , which has roughly 11.5 million players worldwide at last count . Each one of those players is paying $14.95 per month to Blizzard for the pleasure of continuing to play the game. Talk about the ultimate rebill, how would you like to have approximately $171,925,000.00 coming in to your company’s bank account each and every month?

The Shoe Has Spoken

I wanted to give a shout out to Shoemoney for letting me guest post on his blog.  It was a lot of fun and I hope I will be able to do it again in the future. It’s amazing how many new readers have discovered my humble little blog from the post! I wanted to return the favor as much as possible,  and turn some of my readers on to what Jeremy has been working on recently.  His new and updated Version 2.0 of the Shoemoney System is looking even better than the first one so far.  Just watching the free intro video he gives out some pretty good tips.  If you’ve got a spare 30 minutes to check it out, I told him I’d let you guys know about it. You can watch the video here .

Video: Configuring an Iomega SAN and VMware vSphere for iSCSI

I have found the Iomega SMB level network attached storage (NAS) arrays to be very powerful and flexible units. I recently aquired an Iomega Ix4-200D which is a 4TB NAS or SAN (which runs for under $999). It does not only Windows file share but can also be enabled for iSCSI (and many other protocols).

How to Find Thousands More Prospects for Your Business

Ever wonder why conversion rates are so low? A “good” sales page will usually convert between 1 and 5 percent of its readers. Those numbers vary wildly depending on about a zillion factors, but that’s the middle of the bell curve

What is VMware ThinApp and How Do I Use It?

Application virtualization is simply defined as removing the application from the Operating System (OS).  In a typical sense, you install software on an OS and it configures the registry and intertwines with the OS.  The only way to remove it from the OS is to use the uninstall program from Add/Remove Programs. In a typical network, hundreds of applications are deployed and they all have to be managed. With application virtualization, you can abstract the OS resources and present them to the application as a virtual resource.

Freelance Writing from Home: the Pros and Cons

The following is a guest post by Kyle who writes for Medical Coding Certification . Writing can be both difficult and rewarding.  It is certainly a creative outlet, but there is also a technical aspect involved in any linguistic pursuit.  So it takes a particular type of mind to really make a career out of writing.  It can bring about feelings of euphoria (when you’re on a roll) or total depression (as the nefarious writer’s block strikes at random), but it is almost never boring.  However, freelance writing, in particular, has its own special challenges and benefits.  So before you leap at the chance to be your own boss (to an extent), examine some of the pros and cons associated with becoming a writer for hire. Work from home .   PRO :  The major benefit of contract writing is that you can do it from the comfort of your cozy office.  You can formulate a routine that works with your lifestyle and avoid the constant interruptions inherent in an office setting.  Bonus: appropriate attire includes pajamas and you’ll avoid the morning commute!   CON :  You will literally have only your cat for companionship.  Freelance writers can become very isolated if they don’t make an effort to get out of the house once in awhile.  You also face constant distractions like pets that need attention, a house that could stand a little cleaning, and your evil arch-nemesis, daytime television

The Window Ledge at Hope Blooms

While in Buffalo, NY for Buffa10, I posted a little piece on water features and received an email  from one of many of Buffalo’s excellent gardeners, inviting me to see his garden and water feature, which was located across the street from our hotel. Christopher Voltz wrote, “I have a garden “Hope Blooms” at The Victorian which has been on Garden Walk Buffalo for six or seven years and
