Not Your Average Joe’s Health Plan

A Denver Post article offered a brief glimpse into the health benefits of corporate leaders, on the unusual occasion of a former CEO now in legal fight for the health benefits in the style to which he had become accustomed: Poor Joe. He’s not getting the health-care benefits he was promised.

le Week-end

I always seem to have the supreme misfortune to draw the letter W when playing Scrabble in French, as there’s barely one-quarter of a page in the French dictionary devoted to words that begin with that letter. People use “Wu” for Chinese money; although I allow them, it’s not in the French dictionary so I’m not sure that’s in the official rules.

Cocoa Butter Massage Bars

The Basic Recipe for these bars is: One part beeswax One part butter – cocoa, shea or other nut butter One part oil – any oil soft at room temperature The goal in creating the recipe is to have a bar that melts at skin temperature. The beeswax melts at about 160 degrees, the cocoa butter at about 120, and the oils are soft at room temperature…so the combination will create your bar. The butter you use will also determine any adjustments to the ratio

Quote of the Week: Alastair Campbell

“If you are in a senior position in politics or at the very top in business, it is probably as well to assume that life is on the record. When the organisers of any event you are speaking at tell you it is being held under “Chatham House rules”, and that everyone in the room is utterly discreet and trustworthy, it is best to nod and smile

Cisco BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) Basics

As all of the people reading this article probably know, BGP can be a beast that very few network engineers and consultants ever really battle, as it is used only on a specific type of network. This type of network is that of ISP’s and large enterprises with multiple external connectivity points. So why is it used in this way

The Insider Guide to Creating An Audience of Raving Fans

There’s a scene in the animated series Futurama that cracks me up every time I think about it. The show’s characters are at the horse track of the future, but there’s controversy when a race ends very, very closely — so closely that the race officials need a powerful electron microscope to judge the “photo finish.” The track loudspeaker eventually announces, “And the winner is … Number Three, in a quantum finish!” And Professor Farnsworth, who had bet on the other horse, tears up his tickets in a rage and yells, “No fair! You changed the outcome by measuring it!” Didn’t get the joke? Don’t worry, neither did most of the viewers

Google does many things right, but not these

The latest version of Google Docs appears to have removed the ability to add words to the spell-check dictionary. The Google Docs spreadsheet doesn’t have a simple way of displaying just the month and year of a date. You can write a formula that will do that, but Excel allows you to specify custom display fields easily

And now for something completely different… My Soviet Kitchen

Hello girls and boys, Sorry I haven’t been around much lately – combination of lots of work and various niggles (like two evil burglars nicking my laptop). I’m also having a few thoughts about how to manage the blog in future, following an inspirational session at the Romantic Novelists’ Association conference.

Disabling the Touchpad on your Laptop

The touchpad provides full mouse functionality to your laptop but there are instances when you may actually feel more productive without the touchpad. For instance, if you have attached an external mouse to your laptop, you may not need an alternate input mechanism which is the built-in touchpad. Sometimes your thumbs or palm may accidentally touch the touchpad while you’re typing and this may inadvertently move your mouse cursor to a different location in the document.

Civil Service Redundancy Payments to be Capped

An announcement has recently been made by the Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, of the Government’s plans to introduce new legislation to cap redundancy pay for civil servants .  Under the new legislation, compulsory redundancy payments will be capped at 12 months’ pay and voluntary redundancies at 15 months’ pay.  Current redundancy entitlements within the civil service give outgoing redundant employees up to an astonishing six years’ worth of pay.  This far surpasses the benefits available to the masses under the statutory scheme and also the vast majority of enhanced redundancy schemes in the private sector.  It was described by Maude as “untenable”. The new legislation will override previous case law in which the unions successfully challenged the Labour Government’s previous attempt to limit civil service benefits.   It is said that the new measures are to be introduced “as soon as possible”.

Additional meaning to " haista napa"

Kids of Finnish heritage and their fellow travelers usually remember just a few words and phrases of Finnish by the time that they’re adults. One such phrase, haista napa or “smell my belly button,”survives long after it makes sense. Anyway, a recent study indicates that the location of the belly button, if not its fragrance, is an important indicator of sports performance.
