The National Program for Healthcare IT in the U.S., and the Elephant in the Living Room

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has begun to address deficient clinical IT usability. A PDF with presentations on the topic from the recent NIST conference on HIT usability is here (warning: very large, 26 MB). There is a critical “meta-issue” that’s being ignored regarding usability, though, yet it is the elephant in the living room.

Health IT and ‘High Regulatory Standards’: Criminal Negligence for Implementing Defective Systems That Put Data in the Wrong Charts?

Over at the HIStalk blog (a blog whose owner remains anonymous, and who uses an ISP that does not reveal information that could be used to identify him, apparently out of fear of retaliation for controversial stories he posts), the following appeared: Monday Morning Update 7/12/10 From Holy Smoke : “Re: Cerner. Misidentification incidents have been reported with Cerner PowerChart and Millenium in hospitals in Indiana, Michigan, and others after a Cerner upgrade

More on Great Laws

I’ve been thinking about Hakkarainen’s Law of Great Events ™ lately. The law, briefly restated, is that, in any great event, such as a death, wedding, divorce, or other crisis, someone close to you will unexpectedly let you down

Dispersing Devestation

-originally posted on The Recovery Room 20 July 2010 I’ve finally succeeded in getting one of my articles published with a news organization. AlterNet has been kind enough to run this piece, Disaster on a Small Scale: How the Gulf Spill’s Devastation Works Its Way From Plankton to Pelicans. I’m currently working on another story for them that is slated to come out some time in the first week of August

Danger! Car Salesmen Now in Possession of “Perfect Handshake” Equation | Discoblog

To seal more car deals, Chevrolet UK looked to arm its salesmen with the perfect weapon of confidence: an unstoppable handshake. Here’s the secret they received from Geoffrey Beattie, Head of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester: PH (Perfect Handshake)= √ (e^2 + ve^2)(d^2) + (cg + dr)^2 + π{(4^2)}^2 We hope (and suspect) the training posters and equation, supposedly meant for Chevrolet-sellers, are meant for publicity and are not a real attempt to improve customer relations….

The Texas Medical Board acts in the case of the Winkler County whistle blowing nurses

I can’t speak for anyone else who blogs here at Science-Based Medicine, but there’s one thing I like to emphasize to people who complain that we exist only to “bash ‘alternative’ medicine.” We don’t. We exist to champion medicine based on science against all manner of dubious practices. Part of that mandate involves understanding and accepting that science-based medicine is not perfect.

Advancement of Online Marketing

In terms of newspaper readers versus online readers, it is no longer a question of why online marketing has become a staple and print media is losing ground. The real question is why online marketing is working so well

When Sci-Fi Plays Play With Your Identity | Science Not Fiction

Science fiction is often associated with depictions of technology which, to quote Arther Clarke’s third law, is “so advanced that it seems like magic to us.” But science fiction’s other side is less about techno-gizmology and more about pushing us to think about what it is to be human. It asks what it would be like to live with different social norms (think of the group family structure in Caprica, or the androgynous society of Ursula Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness), different notions of ide…

Save us from the armchair philosopher with a blog.

In what is surely a contender for the photo next to the “business as usual in the blogosphere” entry in the Wiktionary, a (male) blogger has posted a list of the sexiest (all-but-one female) scientists (using photos of those scientists obtained from the web without any indication that he had also obtained proper permission to use those photos in his post), and now the blogger says he wants to know what could possibly be wrong about making such a post. Because no one has ever taken the time t…

How can you tell the difference between results you can trust and those you should treat with caution?Over at Genomes Unzipped, Jeff Barrett (who’s authored more GWAS than most) explains some of the key features of these studies, and what to keep an eye out for when interpreting their re…

FedEx Ground has settled a case with the Attorney General of Massachusetts for misclassifying its delivery drivers. FedEx Ground classifies its drivers as independent contractors, instead of employees, which results in substantial cost-savings to FedEx Ground because under such an arrangement its drivers bear FedEx Ground’s overhead costs, among other things
