On January 6, 2010, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) released data concerning charges of discrimination filed with the agency in FY2009. The EEOC resolved a record number of charges alleging harassment and violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. FY2009 saw the second highest number of charge filings nationwide, 93,277 –just about 2,000 filings less than the record high set for FY2008.

Well, it’s January… Every tag line this month will be about “eating light” or “starting over” but I say “eat cookies!” It’s freezing outside. Face it, the best thing you could possibly make right now is an old-fashioned chocolate chip cookie.

I get emails daily from people who want me to mention articles they think may be helpful to visitors to WorkAtHomeTruth. Usually they aren't. This one will be for many of you: “Business school students who are getting ready to find a job may feel both excited and a little apprehensive

The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has seen first light — in other words, taken its first image from space! [Click to embiggen and get access to a big TIFF version.] Nice. It may not look as pretty as a Hubble or Spitzer shot at first glance, but to an astronomer it’s the Mona Lisa. The images are sharp (it’s in focus), the stars are not overexposed, diffuse sources are detected, and the diffraction spikes (the crosshairs centered on stars) are clean.

Unless you’ve been living on another planet, you know that in mid-November, the US Preventive Services Task Force released new recommendations on screening mammography, in which they recommended against routine mammogram screening in women under age 50, and recommended that mammograms now be every two years in women ages 50-74. What you may not have heard is that the Task Force has acknowledged that the mammogram guidelines were poorly worded, and have revised their original statement to clar…

It’s the first day of the sales here – and I never guessed that top of the list would be a huge thick pair of slippers that cover the ankles. But it does get cold here too, and the forecast for this weekend is for actual SNOW. Writing and keeping warm don’t always go hand in hand (or foot in foot) so I snapped up this very subtle pair for about 8 Euros, and my quality of life has improved approximately 200%

Seasonal changes over a year in 60 seconds Eirik Solheim has been diligently recording video clips of the same spot from his balcony that overlooks a beautiful park in Oslo, Norway. He would shoot 30-second videos once every week throughout the year, thus capturing all the four seasons , and then compiled all these clips into a single time-lapse video.

Ever found your eyes glazing over when you read through your own copy or blog posts? I hate to break it to you, but a lot of the products, services, or niches that we write about just aren’t that thrilling. Although the finer points of search engine optimization might keep you glued to your screen, most of your clients or blog readers aren’t feeling the excitement

If you follow me on Twitter , you might have seen an all-out rant the other evening about a complete customer service nightmare related to Amazon.com and UPS. Here’s a run-down of what ultimately happened: I ordered a small chest from Amazon (directly, not a 3rd party seller). Being a somewhat large item shipping-wise, it took a while to get to me

Alright, so last Sunday, the Telegram published a lengthy, front-page story (in partnership with the New England Center for Investigative Reporting at Boston University ), about the local Salvation Army. The article focuses on the house that the army provides for Majors.

It used to be that Marley would run into the other room when I started cooking. We had a very sensitive smoke detector that would sound the alarm whenever it, well, detected smoke. I’m a better cook now, more careful, more patient.

Well, I’ll admit it– this article in the LA Times is actually required reading for any freelance writer who would like to make a career out of it. But darn(!) is it a depressing article! The article (which I discovered thanks to The Irreverent Freelancer ) touches on many of the subjects that “we” (freelance writers, web writers, freelance writing blogs) constantly rehash: the ongoing hustle to find well-paid work in exchange for well-written pieces.

It happens all the time. You are sitting in a restaurant with friends or driving to work and there’s some beautiful music playing on the FM radio station. You would love to buy a copy of that music album for yourself but the problem is that you didn’t get the lyrics so how do you find out the name of that song
