Google, Verizon warned not to "cable-ize" the Internet

Four influential members of Congress, fed up with the Google/Verizon “industry-centered net neutrality policy framework,” are now demanding that the government act in the public interest to enforce real network neutrality. More specifically, they want the FCC to act. Even though passing legislation through Congress would be cleaner and less legally fraught than implementing new rules at the FCC, current political realities make that impossible.

Salted Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

When I worked in the restaurant business, if you happened to walk in during staff meal, you could always tell who were the pastry people: we were the ones dousing our food with vinegar and salt. That is, when we had time to sit down and eat. I like sweets, but I like them tempered with something not-necessarily sweet, which is why sometimes you’ll see a squeeze of lemon juice added to a fruit ice cream base or bakers like me include a pinch of salt in batter, to balance things out.

Baking Ingredients and Substitutions

Because the question comes up from time to time, I thought I’d answer some questions about making substitutions in my recipes and swapping out ingredients. The short answer is: When you substitute or swap out ingredients, results will vary and won’t be the same as mine. Some will work, and others won’t.

Using Terhertz Radiation to Blur Our See-Through Vision | Science Not Fiction

Science fiction movies and TV shows are perpetually trying to see through things: Everyone from Superman to last year’s KITT reboot were all using some method or other to see through walls and clothing. Since we already live in the future, see through technology exists in myriad forms, not the least of which is airport full-body scanning. These scanners are so good at seeing past clothing that they might violate child porn laws in the United Kingdom.

Death, taxes, and the open house

photo credit: TheTruthAbout… Certain things you can just count on. Open houses are a quirky piece of Americana we just can’t seem to shake. You may think they’re a stupid waste of time, or you may think that your home’s salability depends entirely on the curious, time-worn Sunday ritual

Dreary Sundays Are Great Stitching Days

After such a long, busy day yesterday (I was home for all of 30 minutes between 9am and 11:30PM) it was nice to be “stuck” in the house by rain and thunderstorms.  This way I wasn’t tempted to do anything else but watch TV (Christin has lent me all the seasons of Stargate SG1 to watch) and stitch. ‘Tis Greenc2010 La-D-Da Just Cross Stitch Ornament Preview IssueStitched on 32ct Queen Ann’s Lace

EPIC’s outrageous recommendations on healthcare IT project staffing

“Critical thinking always, or your patient’s dead” – Victor Satinsky, MD, NSF-funded summer science training program (SSTP) for high school students, Hahnemann Medical College, early 1970′s. Health IT projects are incredibly complex undertakings in equally complex, mission-critical medical environments.

On The Eve of Bloom Day: Elizabeth Lawrence’s Garden

Here we are, on the eve of another Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. I’ll head out in a bit to see what is blooming in my garden, thinking about Elizabeth Lawrence, and her quote that inspired bloom day, “We can have blooms nearly every month of the year.” I received an email the other day letting me know that Elizabeth Lawrence’s garden and five other gardens will be open for The Garden Conservancy

Another Small Finish

As I’ve mentioned in past entries this year, my desire is to finish the things I have started!  Projects that are sitting in my stitching basket, some for a very long time! First up my small finish!  I can’t remember when I started this, I know it was sometime this year.  For some reason with this piece I just kept dragging my feet!  Well I buckled down this week and got it finished! Welcome
