100 actions to slow biodiversity loss

I received an email a few days ago from Guillaume Chapron of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet) asking me to promote his ‘Biodiversity 100‘ campaign on ConservationBytes.com. I think it’s an interesting initiative, and so I’ll gladly spread the word. Teaming up with George Monbiot of The Guardian, the Biodiversity 100 campaign seeks to encourage scientists and others to compile a list of 100 tasks that G20 governments should undertake to prove thei…

Affiliate Summit East 2010 Wrap-Up

I just got back and all caught up from the trip to New York, so now it’s time for the obligatory wrap-up post.  For those of you that were not able to make it, you should definitely put it on your calendar for next year.  For pure value, contacts gained, and networking, this was the best show of the year for me so far.  Ad-Tech in November would have to be pretty spectacular to beat it. I flew in on Saturday night, and got to The London at about 10:00 pm.  I scoped out the room for a minute, which was very nice, then headed out to dinner at Maison with some friends.  Then we walked around Midtown looking for a convenience store that was open to get some essentials that we forgot to pack.  I didn’t want to get too beat up the first night, so after that I just went to bed

Geometric Langlands at the KITP

There’s a very interesting program going on at the KITP discussing recent work of mathematical interest on 4d supersymmetric gauge theories (N=2 and N=4). These include various connections of 4d gauge theory to geometric Langlands uncovered by Witten and collaborators a few years ago, as well as last year’s conjecture by Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa of a relation between 4d gauge theory and 2d Liouville conformal field theory. In his introductory talk, Edward Frenkel discusses the possibility o…

MemtestCL — a GPU memory tester for OpenCL (supports ATI and NVIDIA GPUs)

One of our concerns at Folding@home is the reliability of returned results – when you run on hundreds of thousands of machines around the world, in diverse environments, it's virtually guaranteed that some machines will be faulty.
