When Interviewees Record! An experiment/interview on journalism | Not Exactly Rocket Science

How can journalists make the most of the interviews that they do? And how can interviewees protect themselves from being misquoted? I’ve been thinking about both of these questions for some time and was delighted when an excellent opportunity to test out some answers presented itself.

What Offers Are Still Working?

Since the rebill crash there has been a general sense of panic among affiliates.  It’s as if there was only one way to make money in the industry, and now that it’s practically dried up, everyone is scrambling.  Funny thing is, that’s absolutely untrue!  There were affiliate offers long before Acai Berries came on to the scene, and there will continue to be offers that make money. Official Vehicle of Affiliate Marketing: The Conversion Van So what are some of the things that are making money still?  Here’s what I’m seeing do very well right now

Heroes and Villains

Progressives have had to fight some tough fights over the past two years — on Healthcare and the public option, Wall Street Reform, on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and even on the Stimulus package which was crucial to beginning our economic recovery. Sometimes, it’s easy to get so focused on beating the Villains in those fights that we don’t stand up enough for our Heroes. But if we’re going to build a progressive majority — one that fights for people and not for corporations — then we have to deliver for our Heroes this November.

And we wonder why we are in this mess.

“Your call is very important to us,” said the chipper robo-voice, just before throwing me into the middle of a familiar easy listening song from the 60s. And as I continued to listen to the entire loop from the “Various Artists” soundtrack, she interrupted each ditty in turn, just as I was starting to get

Shield

There was a Perivale Gallery envelope in the stack of mail that built up while we were away earlier this month. A Shield For My Open Heart sold in July. Shiela told me that a thin black-wearing art teacher from Mississauga purchased it.

Something’s gotta give

As we start the run up to our first year PLE module, I’ve been thinking about what worked well last year, what didn’t, and what needs fixing this time round. What worked well is easy. Friendfolios (and the students who contributed and are still contributing to them) were the star performer. Consequently, we will be rolling out Friendfeed as glue for the disparate PLE elements at the start of the year rather than at the start of the second semester.

Farro Salad with Tomatoes, Mushrooms and Basil

In August, most of the businesses in Paris shut down while a vast number of people take their annual holiday vacations. And in case you think that’s a grammatical error, in French one says les vacances , in the plural.

Estimate of Deaths in Typical Flu Season Is Lowered – NYTimes.com

In presenting the new numbers on Thursday, the centers urged journalists to stop using annual averages like 36,000 or 24,000 and to use more vague estimates like “tens of thousands of people may die.” via Estimate of Deaths in Typical Flu Season Is Lowered – NYTimes.com . Well, good.  That’s good news, and being able to scale the threat against you personally is a good thing. This doesn’t mean, by the way, that you don’t need a flu shot.  You Do.  (I get mine)

Art Deco Spirits Update

I was hoping to have the “Earth” section of Art Deco Spirits finished this week but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.  Life got busy this week and I can probably count the number of hours I’ve found to stitch on one hand.  I really only have myself to blame I got myself busy, probably worked out/ran a little too much.  I’m feeling a bit burnt out, and just need to try to slow down and

Every driver is drunk – bet your life on it

A mentor recently mentioned, in passing, that he stopped riding motorcycles when cellphones came out, as he noticed the average driver distraction level had gone way up.  He said ‘its like everybody’s drunk’. There’s lots of ways to be an impaired driver: physical or mental fatigue, chemicals (legal and not), emotional extremes, etc

Homey-Looking Alien Star System May Host 7 Planets | 80beats

In August 2006, Pluto received its official demotion to dwarf planet status, taking our solar system down to eight planets. In August 2010, exoplanet hunters say they’ve found a haul of new worlds around a single star; that alien solar system may have seven known planets, meaning the system could be more like our home system than any ever discovered

Did Humans Make Tools, or Did Tools Make Humans? | Science Not Fiction

Is our species, Homo sapiens sapiens, the first cyborg species? Gizmodo/New Scientist has a fascinating article up about how humans evolved as a result of technology. Timothy Taylor, an anthropologist and archaeologist at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, submits a theory I am very inclined to believe: that humans evolved from tool-using proto-human primates.

Virus-Powered Rechargeable Clothing Could be Coming to a Store Near You | Science Not Fiction

In a few years’ time, recharging your handheld PC may be as easy as just slipping it into your back pocket. That is, as long as you don’t mind having a virus cocktail woven into your pair of slacks. Yes, the humble virus–that tiny protein-coated bag of genetic material that we more commonly associate with global pandemics–could replace graphite and lithium iron phosphate as the material of choice with which to build the next generation of customizable, high-powered, lithium-ion batteries
