The weather was seriously cloudy and grey at the start of the week, and the city is so much less photogenic then! Which is why I have resorted…eek…to a cat picture. I maintain, however, that the image is really a craft picture, as it shows what you can do with the random crocheted bits that didn’t quite work (in this case, bunny ears belonging to an amigurumi that wasn’t right)

In response to my post about the scientist glut, ScienceBlogling Razib writes: But that aside, what’s the point of funneling more math and physics graduates into math and physics instead of finance if they can’t put bread on the table? Or is the issue narrower, specifically the difficulty of getting an academic job

We are here in Aspen for what is always the first particle physics conference of each year, the Aspen Winter Particle Physics Conference. This is the 25th anniversary of this series, hosted by the Aspen Center for Physics. I have attended myself twice in the past (1998 and 2007) and this year I am an organizer, along with Robin Erbacher, Tim Tait, and Graham Kribs.
It has nearly been a week since the devastating 7.0 earthquake struck Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, and the surrounding cities and towns of this Caribbean country. The disaster is one of the worst in the Western Hemisphere, and our hearts go out to the suffering that is being experienced by so many people in this country

My first exhilirating experience with real-time search came today using Collecta.com to search “Skype down”. Sure there are sites like downforeveryoneorjustme.com that will throw up a message like: “It's not just you! http://skype.com looks down from here.” But what fun is that

From Wholesomebabyfood.com – First an apology – I thought this had been posted at the end of Dec. but I found it in my Draft folder. Luckily, there are no other important posts hanging about in that folder! I learned of an interview done with Frank Greer, MD [American Academy of Pediatrics's Committee on Nutrition]

One question I get asked frequently is ‘what’s your cooking style?’ I definitely try a lot of recipes, in my own special Sharon-way (which usually means following 1/3 of the recipe and winging the rest). One could say, I’m a cooking-from-the-hip/scrounge-the-pantry-kinda-girl. I don’t like having to run out to the store to purchase specific ingredients, so I definitely understand the value of having good staple items stocked in the cupboards. I also like relatively simple yet impressive recipes that are not going to put a big dent in my wallet. Somewhat healthy, plenty of vegetables, and ingredients from the garden or farmers’ market also make the top of my list. So there it is in writing: my ‘cooking style’. My New Year’s goal for 2010 is to share recipe testing, Boulder-Denver restaurant finds, must-have staple ingredients, garden adventures, and ‘how-did-I-live-without-this’ kitchen tips with our readers. What we’d like to happen is simple: We’ll post the cooking fodder but we want you to share your experiences too…so we have a platform to interact. I know this isn’t a new or novel idea, but the way I see it is that this can be a lot of fun. Here’s the first official post…and what a great recipe to start with: Pork Meatball Banh Mi (an adapted recipe from Bon Appetit). These sandwiches are chewy, spicy, tangy, and sweet, the ultimate union of French and Vietnamese influences.

The other night I was sitting at Le Garde Robe , minding my own business, trying to get down a glass of natural wine. Being seven o’clock, naturally, in addition to being thirsty, I was starving, too. And the lack of food (and sulfides) must have started affecting my brain because I started thinking about how I often hear tales from visitors, such as when they told a Parisian waiter they didn’t eat meat and shortly afterward, were presented with a plate of lamb

Texting while driving seems to score pretty high up there on the “I really shouldn’t be doing this right now” list. A recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that truck drivers who were texting on the road were 23 times more likely to find themselves involved in an accident. Incidentally, and much to my bewilderment, truck drivers who talked on cell phones were found to have absolutely no increased risk for crashing
