Matsuri Sustainable Sushi

When I was a teenager, we made a trip to Los Angeles and a family friend took us to a Japanese restaurant. I remember it well, because I was going through that phase where you’re willing to do things on a dare, not because you’re keenly interested in new experiences, but because you want to show off that you’re not afraid of taking on a few dares. And I remember some of my family flipping out a little when we were presented with a big, shiny wooden board covered with raw strips of fish, lined up in neat rows, ready to be eaten just as is.

Free Candlewicking Pumpkin Motif

I was shopping today in my local mercantile (actually Wal-mart, but mercantile reminds me of Little House on the Prairie and I am being nostalgic today.) They had a huge aisle of Halloween candy already set up. The one that caught my eye was this huge brain-shaped bubble gum blob – gross! I passed two girls as I exited the aisle on my way to the snack aisle – I was on a quest for almonds

Guardian Science Blogs

Another group (or as self-styled, “network”) of science blogs is being set up at the Guardian newspaper in order to “entertain, enrage, and inform.” According to the announcement, to start with there will be four blogs covering “evolution and ecology, politics and campaigns, skepticism (with a dollop of righteous anger) and particle physics…”. A fifth will be more generic, and “…will hopefully become a window onto just some of the discussions going on elsewhere. It will also host the Guardi…

Spotted links – 28th August 2010 | Not Exactly Rocket Science

News Geneticist Hugh Reinhoff has finally found a promising gene that might explain his daughter’s mystery genetic disorder. You must read Brendan Maher’s feature on Reinhoff from Nature in 2007. “A US court has issued a temporary block against federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research as permitted by the Obama administration last year,” says Nature.

When Bonus Payments are Protected by the NY Labor Code

In executive compensation disputes, an executive can gain substantial leverage if the subject compensation, typically a bonus, can be classified as “wages” within the meaning of NY Labor Code section 190(1). If the bonus constitutes “wages,” then the bonus is protected against any meddling by the employer and must be paid in full pursuant to section 193 of the Labor Code. In New York, and most other states, wages are protected and must be paid promptly.

Learning from the professionals @ Phoenix Cooks!

On Tuesday I was ecstatic to find out that my best friend’s mom had got us tickets to Phoenix Cooks on Saturday, Sept. 4! From what I’ve heard and read this event is a foodies dream but not in a poor college student’s budget (even though it’s for charity $75  a ticket is steep for me). Fifty local restaurants and hotels show up to display their goods along with local chefs, cooking demonstrations, cooking classes, and tons of samples! First of all, it’s at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge which is a beautiful, relatively new resort that I have never been to! Secondly, it’s five hours of glorious food heaven from 10 am.-3 p.m and I don’t mind waking up early for that.

Could we see an end to recruiters vetting candidates on Facebook?

Getting Down To Business

I’m feeling motivational today.  You might think that motivation is for wimps and losers.  You might think that motivation is cheesy.  You might want to think again.  Affiliate Marketing can be a very isolated industry.  Communication is all done over wires and screens, and it’s every man for himself out there.  You don’t have a manager telling you what to do.  You don’t have anyone setting goals for you.  If you aren’t careful, you can slip into a downward spiral very quickly when things go wrong. I’m a firm believer in goals.  You have to set them, write them down on paper, and put them somewhere you can see them every day.  I have never missed a goal that I have written down this way.  Try it, you might surprise yourself.

Garden Design Elements: Seasonal-shift

I find it very confusing to be in a garden where plants are blooming everywhere you look and there is no place to rest your eyes without seeing something else that screams out to be seen or if you do stop and look at one bloom you have this feeling that you are missing something or not looking at the right plant as if all the flowers you aren’t looking at are tapping you on the shoulder and

Keeping the Promise of Social Security for Older Women and their Families

Last week, Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) celebrated Women’s Equality Day and we continue to commemorate the women who came before us and advocated for our right to vote.
