According to people who know us better than we know our selves, we can’t have more than about 150 friends. Robin Dunbar, professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Oxford University, has conducted research revealing that while social networking sites allow us to maintain more relationships, the number of meaningful friendships is the same as it has been throughout history. Dunbar developed a theory known as “Dunbar’s number” in the 1990s which claimed that the size of our neocortex — the part of the brain used for conscious thought and language — limits us to managing social circles of around 150 friends, no matter how sociable we are.

It has been a month since we launched Zoho Challenge 2.0 and so far we are pretty happy with the response we’ve gotten. Our original target for the service was, as you’d probably imagine, the educational sector. But one of the things we’ve learned after going live with the service is that Zoho Challenge is well suited not only for schools, but also for the commercial sectors

In a recent facebook post, one of the “fans” of the Cross Stitch page was “chatting” back and forth with me about one of my Valentine projects and she said she found it exciting because, according to her, “In my house you are a regular celeb.” I tease with my husband all the time that he is living with a Cross Stitch “cewebrity” and he just rolls his eyes. Of course, I did get recognized in Sam’s Club recently, but it was because I post so much on the fan page for the local weightloss program I participate in! I am certainly NOT a celebrity of any sorts, but I sure get excited when I have contact with Cross Stitch celebrities like Donna Kooler, Mr.

I attended the last six talks at the Symposium on Hate on Saturday, which brought together the (mostly postgraduate) talents of the English and Philosophy departments of both UCD and TCD. I’m sorry to have had to miss the first few talks, as there was some really interesting material presented at the symposium, and quite a heated discussion got going at the end of it

In an essay that ties together recent exposés of serious IT security flaws (starting with Operation Aurora ) and a culture of secrecy that pervades the IT industry and industries who use IT, I ask the question: Is universal healthcare IT really a good idea in 2010?

If you notice any strangeness going on at All Freelance Writing today, please just be patient. I’ll be working on the merger of AFW with the QueryFreeFreelancing.com (as I convert that solely into a site for the book). That means you might see some odd new pages that stretch out the top navigation (they’ll quickly be removed), or if you’re a subscriber it’s possible that you’ll see a lot of new posts show up in the feed (not sure about that).

A representative from Wiley publishing sent me a link to an interesting new paper. Entitled “Using Protistan Examples to Dispel the Myths of Intelligent Design” by Mark Farmer, from the University of Georgia and Andrea Habura, from the University at Albany, New York. It is from the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology and is based upon a presentation they gave at a workshop at a conference.

It looks as if News3Insider.com may have topped out at just over 10 million unique visitors/month around 10/2009 still making it one of the most popular fake news sites in recent history from a pure “unique visitor” standpoint. News3Insider.com at Compete.com And although it's quite doubtful that the visitors to news3insider.com were well-targeted beyond a very broad demographic level, it's also probably true that the person or comany running the site along with the affiliate network(s) and vendors involved made a boatload of money through the deception. If you aren't familiar with the phenomenon of fake news sites you can read about them here: Are Fake News Sites The Next Gold Rush?
