Rue Montorgueil-Les Halles

You might not remember the days before the internet, but when we used to travel somewhere, we’d ask a friend to scribble down a list of suggestions. And we’d often be asked to do the same in return

Do doctors “look like America” (or not?)

With the passage of health care reform, and the shift of the medical profession away from private practice and toward large institutions already, I wanted to revisit some data about the political orientation of medical students and recent graduates surveyed in the mid-aughts. One of the major issues among American elites has been the occupational bifurcation politically between liberals and conservatives, with the former concentrated in the professions which are often affiliated with the mana…

A Refresher on the Mystical Zestimate

There is such a thing as a free lunch. Thanks to Zillow’s star of stage and screen, Spencer Rascoff (I can’t turn on CNBC without seeing he’s grinning likeness these days), I and a room full of die-hard real estate professionals in search of the truth were treated to a session on Zillow’s offerings. Mostly,

The Clothed Ladies of Spring

We often joke about Lycoris squamigera, those late summer flowering members of the Amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae, because when they bloom, the leaves are long gone. Some people refer to these plants as Surprise Lilies because “surprise”, the blooms show up long after the foliage has died back.

FTC Cracks Down On Free Credit Report Offers

Free Credit Report offers have been a hot ticket for a long time. From the annoying FreeCreditReport.com jingles on TV to the hundreds (if not thousands) of websites and affiliate offers, people have been making money on this vertical.  However, it might get slightly tougher to convert these offers now that the FTC has passed down a new law. Effective April 1, 2010, all marketers using the words “free credit report” in any creative (text ad, banner, landing page, email subject line, etc.) must include a large & prominent ( and clickable) disclosure across the top of each page mentioning “free credit reports” that states: Yikes.  This is pretty similar to when Google started forcing people promoting ringtones to put “$9.99 per month” right in their text ads.  It definitely hurt marketers, but they found other ways to market the offers.  I think this change is actually worse than that was, because you have to put it right on your landing page or the advertisers have to put it right on their offer page.  It will be there no matter what traffic source you use to get the clicks.

easter nostalgia

Reading Jeana Marie’s post about dyeing easter eggs with onion skins and silk with her daughters gave me a pang, and I dug out these ancient eggs. The two large ones are goose eggs, and they are at least 24 years old.

A Spring-y Small

Happy Easter to all my blog readers! It was another gorgeous day here in the Ottawa Valley, so Todd and I took full advantage of that going for a 9k walk on the Trans-Canada Trail.  We’re very lucky in that its not too far from our home (just a 5 minute drive), but its somethign we don’t take advantage of.  Today we did, and walked one section of the trail 4.5k in one direction then 4.5k back,

Dominican Experience Day 6 & 7

Friday March 12, 2010 Today was our true “fun in the sun” day!  Our Dominican families packed a lunch for us, we hopped on Wally’s bus and we went to a public beach one used by the Dominicans not owned by a resort.  It was absolutely gorgeous!  White sandy beaches, azure waters, and palm trees.  There was a fantastic sea breeze, we never felt too hot!  The water was just pefrect, not cold but

The DOL Says Loan Officers are Entitled to Overtime Pay

In a major set back to banks and finance companies, the U.S. Department of Labor recently held that mortgage and loan officers are entitled to overtime pay. This reverses a long standing policy that mortgage loan officers were exempt from overtime pay under the administrative employee exemption of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Involtini: Feta & Prosciutto Rolls

I was having drinks at a friend’s house last night, who is a cuistot , the French slang for a cook. I don’t think you’d say cuistat for a woman, but whatever you want to call us, the conversation pretty much stayed on one topic: Food. We talked literally for hours while we drank brisk sauvignon blanc and picked apart an amazing wedge of 30 month-old Comté cheese from a giant wedge on a cutting block positioned strategically between us.

Pine Nut Syndrome

I noticed something weird this week: just about everything I ate tasted odd. No matter what it was, from bland rice cakes to strong, dark coffee, a few minutes after I ate or drank it, there was an odd, bitter flavor lingering in my mouth
